I am 32 and have always hated the taste of all kinds of alcohol whether it be beer, wine, or liquor. People have always told me it would grow on me, but it never has. I consider that a good thing since it makes it easier not to become an alcoholic. Still, many people have told me that they love the taste of beer, wine, etc., and I wonder if their palettes are different than mine.
I once read an article in a science magazine that said 25% of the world's population are what's called supertasters. Their taste buds are supposedly much more sensitive to taste and they react more severely to things like hot peppers, bitter vegetables and alcohol. These things are all borderline painful in my mouth and I wonder if the people who like them also feel the pain.
Is wine bitter to the people who like it the way it is to me? Are peppers painful to the people who like them? Is broccoli bitter? Etc.

wine is an acquired taste. Start with a Zinfandel and once you like that you can move on to a Chardonnay. Then you can move up to Cabernet.

I like "Franzia Chillable Red" it is very low in cost and some might say cheap because of the fact it really is a wine in a box type of thing but I like it. About $10 for 30 glasses and I like to have 1 or 2 everyday after work. It relaxes me I guess. I might say that it tastes a bit bitter but wine is an acquired taste for sure and there are many different wines. Stay away from the merlots and go for the fruity wines and you will find one that you like for sure!

The bitter taste in wine comes primarily from the tannin. Tannin is a compound found mostly in grape skin but also somewhat in the pulp. As a result, you will have significant tannin in red wine and slight in red wine.
Tannin is the hardest part about red wine, but that also is the thing that makes red wine oh so good. As red wine ages, tannin breaks down, bringing out the beautiful flavor underneath the tannin and the oak flavor. That is the reason why we age wine.
People who are new to wine are not used to the tannin. For wine, cheaper wines can be made from second and third presses, which means that they get more juice out of the pulp and skin by pressing them. These wines are higher in tannin, as compared to the more premium wines. Secondly, cheaper wines are not aged, while more expensive wines are aged (kept longer in the barrels and bottles, hence more costs to making the wine), so the tannin in cheaper wines have not had the chance to break down.
My suggestion for you is to start out with white wines. White wines such as Sauvignon Blanc and Rose (such as white zinfandel) have low tannin, thus you don't have to worry about the bitterness. What you have to get used to is the alcohol content. Once you are used to the alcohol and the minimal amount of tannin, then you should move on to wines made from thin-skin grape, such as Pinot Noir. Overtime, you may be used to bitterness of tannin. If you can't, at least you can enjoy some wines such as the white wines.
Good luck and give that a try.

Everybody tastes things differently. I am used to peppers and do not find them painful. Broccoli is not bitter to me. I don't care so much for wine but wine with high acid or reds with tannins ARE bitter.

Not everyone likes alcohol. There's no law saying you have to drink to be accepted. Anyone who says you must drink to be around them... well... they're not the kind of people you need to hang out with.
Some of us like wine. Some of us like beer. Some of us like hard liquor. It's an acquired taste. You like it or you don't. Pure and simple.
I don't think it's because you're a "super taster". Everyone has different tastes and thoughts on food and drink. What one person likes, the next might think is disgusting.

I love wine. But if your question is whether you're a super taster, the test is to take something like 1/2 a teaspoon of nutrasweet and mix it into half a glass of water...if it tastes bitter, you are indeed a super taster.

It depends on our own taste on which white or red wine we like and which grape variety on how much acidity may be in the wine if grown in cooler climate the more acidity in the wine the warmer the climate the less acidity in the wine.My favorite wines are from California and Australia.
