They should have never used a human medication on an animal. Dogs react very different to medication than humans do and it could have killed it! I know they are family, but you need to report them so the poor dog can find a loving home.
If the dose was too much for the dog to handle it could have had seizures resulting in brain damage, severe stomach cramps including vomitting or diarrhea, or even death.

a layperson doesn't know how much of any drug to give a dog much less something like valium. the only time i have ever seen valium used for dogs was in a case of the animal refusing to eat. it is given by a vet I.V. and will usually make them eat within a minute. after they eat they sleep, but this was not why the drug was given.
if the dog truly needs to be tranqued to go to the vet, then you should contact the vet and explain the situation. if they have an ongoing relationship with the owner they may allow them to come in and pick up a prescribed dose of tranquilizers. if they do not have a regular vet, then they may have to just go without tranquilizing.
under no circumstances should an animal be given a human drug without knowledge and recommendation of a vet. it can be lethal

Why not ask the vet this question? Only takes a phone call and then you would know for definite whether it was a good thing or a bad thing. Also if there is a problem getting the vet to the vets, a good vet will make a home visit just like a doctor, it will cost you more but if the dog is sick she needs to be seen.

it's never a good idea to give a human drug to a dog without talking to a vet first. However, that being said, there is valium labled for dog use and it is used to treat hyperactivity due to separation anxiety. If the dose was small, it wouldn't have hurt her. Question is, what is small? Only the vet knows.

What dose of Valium? What size/weight of dog? I know of occasions when a dog has been given Valium by the Vet but the dosage is what is important here. Too large of a dose and they can kill the dog.

Dogs can not handle many drugs made for humans. On the other hand, many drugs for humans are also used at te vet clinic. It is best to NEVER give a dog a drug that was not prescribed for him unless you know the facts on how to administer, dosage and if it is safe.
Simple things like Tylenol can kill a dog. Eer o the side of caution and always seek a vets advice before you administer anything from home.

I'm not sure if you mean your father in law tried to give her Valium.if he did.........he most definately should not have. The only drugs dogs should be given are those prescribed by a vet, I would have thought.

Depends on the dog and it's size etc. Some breeds can't tolerate certain drugs at all.
