Spend some time with the dogs first and pick it on personality and how it seems to act around you. You may want to adopt a one year or older dog who has a definate personality already. Personally I've had both male and female dogs; but don't really have a preference. Recently when I adopted a 6 yr old female chihuahua I only wanted two things in a dog 1) a dog who doesn't bark a lot because I live in an apartment 2) a dog who would get along with my 2 cats and not chase them. I got lucky and the little 6 yr old chihuahua (female) that I got hasn't barked in the 4 months since I've had her (at all) and is friends with my cats. Don't be concerned with the spaying/neutering costs as you can get a dog at the animal shelter and all that is already taken care of in the cost of the adoption which is usually around $100. They also give them their shots and Frontline for fleas before you pick them up.

Ive had 3 dogs in the last 17 years and I prefer males over the females. After the dogs have been fixed the males seem to slow down and are a lot calmer. Females seem to get more aggressive.

It makes no real difference -- it depends on how you raise the dog. If you want to talk money, it will cost more to have a female spayed than a male neutered, but overall there is no real difference beyond your preference.
EDIT: Someone said that female dog urine will burn the grass and male dog urine will not. This is false -- the only reason people notice it with their females is that they squat to urinate. All their urine hits that one spot. A male dog will often lift his leg when urinating and he'll go against a tree, a fence, the house, or something else. It will run off from that and then to the ground, so you notice "burning" less because it's been absorbed/sprayed along something else first.

A male dog is usually better because they are easy to train. That's why i have 2 male and 1 female.

I would perfer a female for the fact that you can do a good "belly rub" without having to worry about rubbing the wrong thing. But I do own a male and a female, and I dont think that gender has much of an effect on the personallity.

They both make wonderful pets. Males and females do act a little different, but it really depends on the dogs breed. My husband and I own three APBTs, one male and two females. Our male, Brooklyn, is a bit more protective of us than our females are, but at the same time, he is a big baby! He loves everyone unless he feels that my husband and I are really in danger and even then, all he does is sit right on top of us and watch the person that he feels is a threat. Our females aren't quite as protect as Brooklyn is. Destiny is absolutely fearless and she loves everyone and Jayda is very timid (her last owners abused her), but at the same time, not much really scares her and she is very friendly. They each have their own personality. Our females each act differently, it's not like they act the same just because they are both females. I would suggest that you do some research on different breeds first. Every breed is different and not every breed is right for everyone. Then, once you have decided on a breed, do some research on how the males tend to be and how the females tend to be. Personally, I don't care if the dog is male or female, I love them all! lol!
Good luck! : )

It all depends on the situation. If you decide to get your pet fixed (which I strongly suggest), male dogs may be better for you because it costs less for the procedure. Also, if you do get a female, but don't get her fixed, she could get pregnant. It really depends on what you look for or your situation.

When Female dogs go to the bathroom, they burn the grass, becuase of something in their urine.]\
Male dogs can be a little more aggresive, but sweet too.
Females tend to lick more, but they can be very sweet
Both aare good, but I've learned that a male can be better
And it's not true that a nueterd male will not lift his leg. My male has been nutered since he was a pup, and he still lifts his leg.

It depends on what breed and what you are looking for. Generally males are calmer than females and they tend to want to be with you at all times. Girls on the other hand tend to be more wilder and more standoffish. I should know I own 4 female dogs and 3 are wild and crazy and one is standoffish.

It is basically a matter of personal preference. Females need to be spayed and preferably before their first season. The females, in general, remain a little more independent of us. A male will need to be neutered before he reaches sexual maturity so it lessens the chances he will want to 'mark' in the house. Males have a tendency to bond tighter to us and be a little more loving and dependent on us. So, do you want a dog that will go do it's own thing, or one that his whole life practically revolves around you?
