I got rid of the cats because i have a 20 month-old son and i a pregnant. The cats never went outside so i dont know how they got them in the first place. I used everything i could find to get rid of the fleas on the cats before i got rid of them. I used sprays, shampoos, foaming shampoos. But, after I got rid of my cats I bombed the house hoping to get rid of the fleas. For some reason it did not work and I let the foggers sit for 3 extra hours. Are there any suggestions out there?

That is so sad. I would never ever give my animals away period... especially for something as silly as fleas. There are so many treatments out there... this could have been avoided. Shame on you.

However, I do feel for your son, so here is what you do:
The most important part of ridding your house and yard of fleas is cleaning all areas where your pet lives. Focus on the areas where your pet spends most of his/her time since this is where there will be the greatest number of flea eggs and larvae.

Cleaning- Wash all of your pets bedding thoroughly. Vacuum furniture and floors, including baseboards, every day for the first week including underneath furniture and then throw away the vacuum bag. Twice weekly vacuuming of the entire house for the next month will help remove flea eggs and larvae, which may be lingering in the carpet. Wash/mop all hard surface floors in the house with a dilute bleach solution, again focusing on the areas where your pet spends most of his/her time.

Knockout- This is an area treatment spray which kills adult fleas on the furniture and carpet, and persists in the environment to kill eggs, larvae, and adults for up to 7 months. This product should be applied as directed on the label to all areas of the house where the pet spends time. It can also be used in the grass and leaves in your yard to help eliminate fleas outside. Due to weather conditions, the treatment of the yard may be less effective at times. It is extremely important that you continue to clean and vacuum your house for at least 3 to 4 weeks beyond the initial flea treatment to remove the fleas that may have not been killed by the spray.

It's not fair to the cat to make it give up the home it knew just because you don't know what you're doing. You obviously know how to use the internet- why not use it to learn about fleas? The cat isn't the problem, but it had to be bothered with fleas AND give up it's home. That's ridiculous. Some flea nests are outside and the fleas can find their way in. Sometimes bombs don't kill the eggs which hatch and re-infest your home. Getting rid of fleas is an ongoing process, new batches of fleas hatch every 3 weeks. Sounds like you needed to treat your home, cat AND yard. Wipe down any surfaces- counters, desks, shelves- where the eggs will most likely be. Vacuum often and seal the vacuum bag before disposing it. Lots of fleas can live deep in your carpet and may have been there before you moved in. Poor cat.

How about calling a professional exterminator? You claim you used 'everything' on the cats, so obviously there is *nothing* you can get which would possibly work. It's equally obvious you were premature in 'getting rid of' the cats because it didn't solve your problem, did it? It's also apparent you're looking for some way to ease a guilty conscience because you've repeated the same question with more excuses for your behavior.

And you've already been told foggers *DON'T WORK*! So call a professional now and save us all the aggravation.

All you had to do was use Frontline on your cats. You really shouldn't have owned a cat if you couldn't handle a little case of fleas. Call a pesticide company, like COOKS, to come spray your house- this will make all the fleas die. Also, cats don't have to go outside to get fleas. Fleas often live in carpet and then get transfered to animals. You really should be more responsible instead of just getting rid of your pets because of fleas.
Also, for future reference- all animals get fleas and if you are not responsible or caring enough to deal with that- do not get another pet. When you got the cats you accepted the responsibilities of having them and a little case of fleas could have been taken care of with some Frontline from your vet- which you obviously did not talk to because they would have told you that.

It's not fair to the cats that you weren't responsible enough or didn't know what you were doing to get rid of the fleas and in return they had to be given to another home.

If your child gets a case of lice, will you be putting it up for adoption? It's the same concept. The fleas were treatable but you didn't do anything to prevent them or get rid of them and the cats had to suffer from you being irresponsible.

Fleas were more than likely carried in from the outside on you or a family member - so technically it was NOT your cat's fault. You could have used advantage or frontline on your cats-it is very very effective if used correctly.

To rid your home of fleas sprinkle Borax washing powders on your carpets and under your furniture. Leave it overnight then vaccuum.. Continue to vaccum daily or sometimes twice a day if time presents itself. This will get rid of the fleas... I would try and get the cats back.. it wasn't their fault... fleas are horrible everywhere this year!

Indoor cats get fleas from fleas that come in on our shoes and clothing from outdoors. The cats should not have been blamed.

Advantage on the cats would have killed the adult fleas trying to eat off the cats, as the current ones die, new ones in the house would have jumped on and been killed too, keeping up till the fleas, which bite cats and usually not people, would die out completely.

Getting a dehumidifier running in the house to dry out the air would kill the eggs, they need moisture to grow and hatch.

Your best bet would have been to keep the cats, once they were treated with $10 each worth of Advantage. As it is, you're going to have to call either the vet to ask for suggestions, or the city health department for even stronger pesticides to use in your house, exposing your kids to that as well.

Always glad to hear about ANOTHER irresponsible pet owner!!!! You could have just gotten some Advantage for the cats and the WHOLE problem would have been gone! Now, you got rid of the cats so the easy way to get rid of the fleas in the house is gone too!!!!!!!!
Might have to call an exterminator!!! That is pretty expensive!!
Don't get any more pets either!!!!!!

And now you see that getting rid of the cats did NOT remove the flea problem. I suggest you call a trained exterminator to spay the home for fleas.

The safest and cheapest method of getting rid of fleas is to use a mixture of boric acid and salt. More information on getting rid of fleas is available at http://pests.in/fleas.html
