Kittens are 9 wks. old., and we have fleas everywhere. Washing with dawn soap and flea combing was really useless! Once the kittens were wet, I could see lots of fleas, but they stuck to the kittens' skin, and would not come out with a flea comb (I could catch maybe 3 fleas out of 50 with flea comb and dawn). The mother cat and kittens clawed me real good, and some bit me. I'm well aware of the flea life cycle, and the fact that the environment has to also be throughly cleaned on regular basis. However, I really need to get those fleas off the animals too (it's really bothering them). I don't want to use any heavy chemicals. Some natural stuff is toxic too. I use Diatomeceous Earth on the carpet and the couch some times, and each time cough, and have headache for several days. I've tried vinegar and water, lemon wash, etc.; nothing has worked that well. Can anyone suggest something non toxic for the kitties? Does Cedar oil sprays really work? (they are expensive ).

Thank you for all your suggestions. However, I think the the term "non-toxic" solution to the flea problem is being missed in my request. Frontline, Advantage, etc. enter the animal's blood stream through the skin, and later lodge in their liver and kidneys, causing problems later on. Borax is poisonous. Dawn dish soap and flea combing ( as I has mentioned in my initial description did not work (I know some people say they've had results, I didn't. Not even a dent was made by this approach, read my initial description above). So........... If there's any other non - toxic solution that comes to mind, please............. let me know. Thanks to all who responded, and those who will respond after this.

Dawn (or Joy) Detergent and water... it does work. We use it all of the time at the clinic with kittens as young as 2 weeks old. Perhaps you did not use enough detergent.

FYI, your kittens are old enough for Frontline. I know you mentioned you did not want to use any chemicals, however, you need to get those fleas off your cats before you house becomes infested, before your kittens become anemic, and before your cat/kittens get tapeworms.

You need Advantage. Nothing cheap and home-made is going to work. The kittens are probably anemic and probably also have tapeworms.
You treat with Advantage for three months and that is all you have to do. No bombing, no spraying. You will have to fork out some money to take care of the problem however.
Then SPAY the mom so you will not have to inflict parasites on a litter of kittens again!!!!

I don't care how many times you wash them in Dawn or even flea shampoo. Clearly, the environment is LOADED!!!! You would have to bathe them daily!! Just suck it up and buy the Advantage. You can get the large dog tubes and break them down for the cats. It will save TONS of money.

Might as well go with Advantage or Frontline - the kittens can be treated directly, as they're over 8 weeks old.

Barring that, soak them (and I mean *soak*) in warm water with a small amount of dish detergent - keep it out of their eyes, of course! While they're wet, comb thoroughly with a flea comb, checking every little bit of their fur. Then rinse well and towel dry. Repeat daily for a week or so.

Or, just get some Advantage.

First I must say PLEASE forget about ninety nine% of what those idiots wrote on right here! Such as 7 grime is NOT riskless for cats, nor is Hartz flea merchandise, or that ridiculous vacuume factor. The man or woman who advocated frontline at a cost of .eight may be flawed, it's .eight in line with 10 lbs no longer one million lb, three.two cc is a MASSIVE overdose. As for what you will have to do, the satisfactory factor is potential (made by means of Bayer) it comprises imidacloprid which could be very riskless on cats and highly robust with fleas. The satisfactory factor approximately Advantage is that you simply observe it as soon as per 30 days and preserve the cats interior. Wherever the cats move the fleas will bounce on them, they'll then be not able to chunk the cats because of the Advantage and can die in a while thereafter. Bottom line, there is not any have to deal with the carpet or any otherpart of the apartment while utilizing potential, all that's required is the program of potential and positioned the cat within the room. It is extra luxurious than the stuff at walmart however the change is that it is going to truthfully paintings and won't kill your cat. As for hartz merchandise, I have obvious dozens of cats are available in having violent seizures and lots of finally die as a consequence of the hartz flea drops. The flea baths are WAY to harsh for kittens and most effective kill those on them, so that you could must be bathing them continually to kill all the ones they'll decide on up within the atmosphere. I cannot pressure ample that flea collars, dips, and retailer company drops are all very useless and DANGEROUS for any cat, principally ones as younger as yours. Many vets will promote potential by means of the tube instead than forcing you to shop for the whole four month deliver.

Hi, use Fronline it's fantastic stuff. It got rid of the fleas on my kitten and he has not had any on him since he's been on it. You need to make sure it all goes onto the skin and not the hair when you apply it. It stays on the cats skin spreading all over,so you don't have to wait for the fleas to bite .They die quickly when they make contact with the cats skin. 3 months supply is about £22.You can buy it over the counter at your local vets.Frontline is one of the best products on the market, that's why vets always recommend it. Good Luck.
