Crowing is proclaiming territory & mate(s) if in 5 yr he has not seen another rooster or heard another rooster he may have decided this is no longer worth it since there are no challengers! OR it could be he's feeling himself to old to kick a*@ so he's going to "hide out" quietly and not attract challengers (sometimes a rooster won't crow if a nearby rooster sounds to him to be his superior)

you say there is a recent change in crowing habits ,could be he is loosing interest at the ripe old age of five years,i surmise you rear poultry as a hobby ,in case you are interested in breeding I would suggest replacing with a younger more virile rooster.this change would provide an interesting companion of your hens.

I wouldn't crow much either if I had 12 wives.

I'd be too henpecked.
