I guess during those classes classes, making a couple of quick, noticeable glances will help (but look away immediately after he turns his head towards you) grab his attention a little bit. Be partners with him (if you can) if your teacher wants the class to work on a cooperative assignment (i.e. - pick partners). Try to get near him or talk to him whenever you can, try and be with him to show him that you're interested in him.
If you see him in the hallways, say hi to him, even if that means going out of your way to get to him. Hopefully he'll notice this and take it into consideration.
Stop by his locker before, during, or afterschool (right afterschool usually works, since he should be by himself...unless he has a bunch of friends following him everywhere) just to say hi or start a quick conversation with a funny remark or something of that nature.
When you are able to talk to him, even if it's a brief conversation, remember some of the little things and bring it back up in a later conversation - it shows that you're definitely interested in him.
Eye contact and smiling/grinning or laughing while talking to him should send him a signal as well. For me, if a girl begins to smile a bit and keep eye contact (not in a freaky way...more like she's actually paying attention and actually interested in what I have to say), it's definitely a turn-on and good signal that she's interested.
All the little things will help. Just remember that these things take time and patience, so don't try and rush it, otherwise you may screw up. Eventually, he should open up a bit more and you can talk to him easily. It's always getting started that's the frustrating part, though.

Guys from Michigan like the same kind of girls as guys from other states; girls who are friendly, loyal, fun to be with, etc. If you don't have the nerve to walk right up to him and ask him for a date, you could be more indirect. Make a point to try to talk with him; the actual subject matter isn't that important, it could be about your classes, music, sports etc; when you talk with him look at him and smile. Try to appear interested in what ever lame stories he may try to impress you with and laugh at his jokes; make it so he enjoys the time he spends with you! Most guys know that when a girl repeatedly seeks them out for conversation/company that she is probably interested in him.

1st find out where he is from. Are you interested in Hockey? If it is michigan, and he is a guy-guy he will like sports from the area. Talk to his best bud, he would shed some like most likely.

Michigan boys are not aliens!
Silly, he's just a guy. Ask him what he thinks about the new place, his family, interests, hobbies, sports... etc.
Just talk to him. Also, you can ask his friend about him.
Good luck.
