Ok... heres my problem. I really want the 590 for home protection, but I also want to be able to shoot some clay birds at the range. I recently found out that there are no Mossberg 590 barrels available on the market with adjustable chokes! 500 barrells wont fit! The only alternative is going to a gunsmith and fabricate my existing barrel or whatever. So I still have a couple days to go (10 day waiting period) for my 590. Should I keep it or go with the 870 Express which comes with a mod choke and is on sale right now? Thanks for your help.

You have answered your own question. You could have bought the Mossberg 500 barrel and ,a magazine tube and spring and you would have what you claimed to have wanted/needed all along.
Done the work yourself without a Gunsmith in just a few minutes..But you chose to not go that route..That's fine
To be honest with you I for one don't understand why you would want the 590 in the first place for home protection. The 590 is a highly specialized Shotgun designed for law enforcement and military applications. The 870 Express can do that and more..easily.You have a Mossberg with a anodized aluminum receiver vs. an all steel receiver on a Remington 870.With the 870 you have conversion parts and barrels in every length from 18" riot barrels and rifled (w/rifling) slug barrels with adjustable sights to 30" multi choke barrels. These are all drop in options and don't need any fitting by a Gunsmith. In all fairness to the Mossberg models, they are well made guns, but they were manufactured after the 870 Wingmaster/Express had already been marketed/sold, so Mossberg could get a percentage of the market share set by the extremely popular Remington 870 series in the first place. Mossberg has also started manufacturing barrels to fit the 870 Remington guns ( Hummmmm wonder why?)...They say the best compliment, is imitation. Here is a perfect example. The only advantage to Mossberg over the Reminton 870 is a cheaper price. Do yourself a favor and go with the 870 Express, and you will be giving up nothing ..You will not be sorry..Fact..

WOW a 10 day wait,I'd hate to live where you do you must be from Calli.I own a 590 and I really like it.Start calling around to see what gunsmiths can do for you,I don't see why they cant just thread your barrel for chokes. But if they say it will be too hard or somthing get the 870 there is nothing wrong with them I used one for hunting for years.

I own a lot of Remington shotguns and rifles. We have two Rem 870 shotguns. You can't wear out a 870. My son and I have tried. I have one Mossberg and it shoots OK but for a good steel shotgun, the Remington gets my nod.

You cannot go wrong with the Remingtom 870. Barrels and accessories for this gun are numerous, and the gun is super reliable. It has been around since 1950.

I own both.
The Moss sitis in the back of safe.

The 870 on the other hand is my go to shotgun. it is the best home defender out there. I am a guard at the jail and it is the shotgun we relay on when we have to. they have never faild. i have put over a 1000 shells in mine in one day and never had a problem.
Come to think of it i am going to sale the 590

I would have to go with the Remington, I have several in my collection. I am not a big fan of Mossberg, have had a few in the past and ended up trading them in on Remingtons and Winchesters.
Happy hunting/shooting!!

I like the Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag.

I picked up a 18.5 barrel for it on EBAY a few years ago. Takes 2 minutes to swap the barrel yourself.

But its your own personal opinion that counts. Try borrowing someones and shooting them.

Id go with the Remington since it can be used for more things like hunting, clay shooting, and home defense.
