In some countries dog is eaten. However here in the US (and elsewhere) this practice is looked down upon and banned. Why is this, they're animals not people. How can you justify eating other meat, but blast the idea of eating dog. And dont tell me because dogs are smart. Pigs are extremely intelligent animals (comparable to dogs) and so are cows and such. Where does it stop being ok to eat certain animals and allow eating others? i think all animals are fair game to be eaten.

don't use a "cuteness" excuse on me either. I find piglets and chicks and rabbits to be cute as well. that doesnt stop me from eating them

Even though I have gold fish in my fish tank, I have no problem eating fish. When people live a comfortable life and have money for their animals, they would natually become picky about what they eat.

Cutness is relative. Any animal can be considered cute. Companion is not a good excuse either, because how would you know other anumals don't make a good companion?

After all, we are in a free country, people can eat whatever they want. If you don't like it, don't eat it. But don't tell me what to eat.

I understand what you mean here . If someone can eat a cow and a pig , then its really no different from a dog , cat etc ... its still an animal

personally i'm a vegetarian and i find that eating any kind of flesh is absolutely appalling , which is why i don't eat meat of any kind ( a lot of cruelty goes into slaughtering them ... )

However , i respect that other people have different views as to what i have , i was simply stating my opinion .

most of this argument comes from people who have have never actually caught their own food (which a large portion of people on the planet must do)
we have been trained (brainwashed) into these perceptions of etiquette
personally i agree with you in that you cannot justify which animal is ok to eat and which is not
i will say though that eating pigs to me is not too flash but only because i see how pigs live (re samuel jackson in pulp fiction)
i live in a country where it is ok to eag dog and horse and i came from a country where it is ok to eat kangaroo and crocodile
incidentally the original people from australia still eat animals that make other people cringe but who is right or wrong
at the end of the day if there were no animals left i have no doubt we would eat each other
ps i do not agree to being cruel to anything living

The western world, which is only about a 3rd of the world, have relationships with animals. In the other 2/3rds of the world don't usually have pets. Westerners humanize pets, the rest of the world only raises animals as food. So who is wrong? Neither side of the issue is wrong. Yet each side views the other as crazy. Either crazy for humanizing pets by making them pets or crazy for eating animals. Personally, I have eatten many animals that most would consider shcking. I prefer to call them exotic foods.

It's NOT wrong. It's entirely psychological - a social stigma.
And you may have noticed, here in north american, even the meat that we DO eat is transformed so much even before we buy it that it in no way resembles the animal it once was.
Seriously, in most of europe, you buy a chicken, it's a chicken. it has a herad, feet, a beak, often still has feathers!!
Here, we simply can't handle that. We are brainwashed into thinking that eating animals is wrong, but instead of standing up to that belief we just keep doing it while pretending that's not what it is. How pathetic.
Seriously though, horse is good. It tastes very much like beef but it's WAAAAAAY healthier.

...The real question is: why do vegetarians eat fish? Don't fish have feelings like other animals? I've always wondered...

Why it is wrong.... are you looking to convince your self that it its right or wrong, or you want every one in this world start eating dogs? Answer is simple that God prohibits doing so, althought i understand this is not what you want to listen, but still i believe i should state whats right.

Eating or not eating some thing (or for that matter any act) is governed by three things 1) Eating that may be harmful to you 2) Eating may not be allowed in the religious believes of a person and third is person's own choice and dislikes. You need to check with doctors to get answer on point 1, need to check religious scholors of your religion (if you have one) for second point and in the end.. ask your self. Definitly majority of people fall in one of these three categories, and end up not eating those. If you can eat... its your choice and you are responsible for your own acts, why bothered with why others are not eating? You should check with some authentic guys in medicine, religion or psychology if you are too much bothered with this thing. Yahoo answers are filled with guys answring for fun, really do not hve any authentic knowledge about this subject

i have eaten horse b4 i was tricked into it which wasn't much appreciated. really there nothing wrong with eating them we are carnivores in the end and it is a form of meat.it on a personal level that people generally tend not to eat them, animals such as dog and cats are usually very much considered part of a family in many countries and u wouldn't consider eating your sister or brother etc because they are meat. game meat r fine to eat y not no different from a cow or pig possibly better really as they have lead a wild natural life and have been fairly shot of caught n therefore will improve the species by natural selection!

It's personal opinion. Some people think it's wrong because of the closer relationship people have to animals such as dogs and horses.

I personally would never be able to bring myself to eat dog because I feel close to dogs in a way which I doubt I will ever feel to cows or sheep.

Actually the new testament of the bible says that all God's creatures are fit to eat. Also, there is no biological reason that we cannot eat cats and dogs. The only reason we don't is that many people see them as companion animals. Seeing a labrador on a spit in the yard next door would probably freak most people out. Personally I think it would be great if we started eating cats to reduce their numbers.Perhaps we could approach Macdonalds with the idea ?

The domisticated dog and cat are not comprable to pigs, cows, and other such animals. These animals have a long history of being worked, and because of this participated in the food chain in very specific ways. Cats and dogs are not apart of the Western food chain because they are seen as domesticated pets. Even more than pets, they are companions to some. They live, sleep, and even travel with us humans. They can replace the feelings of loss and depression, they can help children with pervasive developmental disorders by implimenting talking, socialization, and care inside the home, and of course there is always the seeing eye dogs who are both companions and the eyes of the blind. For these reasons, it is not socially accpetable to eat these animals in our culture. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, simply that the relationship we have with dogs and cats is different than say, other countries.
