Most Christians do not take the stories of creation in the Bible literally. Catholics believe the book of Genesis tells religious truth and not necessarily historical fact.

One of the religious truths is that God created everything and declared all was good.

Catholics can believe in the theories of the big bang or evolution or both or neither.

On August 12, 1950 Pope Pius XII said in his encyclical Humani generis:

The Teaching Authority of the Church does not forbid that, in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred theology, research and discussions, on the part of men experienced in both fields, take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living matter - for the Catholic faith obliges us to hold that souls are immediately created by God.

Here is the complete encyclical: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/pius_xii/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-xii_enc_12081950_humani-generis_en.html

The Church supports science in the discovery of God's creation. At this time, the theories of the big bang and evolution are the most logical scientific explanations. However tomorrow someone may come up with better ideas.

As long as we believe that God started the whole thing, both the Bible and modern science can live in harmony.

With love in Christ.

The Archbishop may say that, but it doesn't mean it's going to happen. Part of the Deposit of Faith is that Adam and Eve were our original parents and the Original Sin of Adam, which damned the entire human race to death, for which God's only begotten Son was sent to reverse. It's been around for a long time that parts of Genesis are allegorical, so that is nothing new, but there are 9 things that we MUST believe in as Catholics: 1. Creation of all things by God at the beginning of Time 2. Special Creation of Man 3. Formation of the First Woman from Man 4. Unity of the Human Race (with God) 5. Original Happiness of our First Parents 6. Divine Command placed upon Man to prove his obedience (to till and *protect* the Garden) 7. Transgression of that command at the instigation of the Devil (ate the apple, didn't protect the garden from Satan.) 8. Fall of our First Parents from a State of Grace 9. Promise of a Future Redeemer No one can change the Deposit of Faith for it is protected by the Holy Spirit from error, the Archbishop may not believe in an actual Adam & Eve or in Original Sin, but the Church does and has always taught that--it won't change.

Well if you read on, it says that they had another son named Seth. Well Cane and Seth couldnt really have babies either but anyway if you read on it says that Adam and Eve had many more sons AND daughters. So it would have been okay back then genetically to reproduce with your brother or sister because Adam and Eve were created perfectly because when they were created there was no sin. So they didn't have any mutations in their body. Every human today has mutations even though they might not show on the outside because they are probably recessive. But anyway, brothers and sisters wouldnt have the same risk of having a mutated baby because their parents were so perfect physically. When sin came into the world, mutations and errors started happening gradually so that now it would be very risky to have a baby with someone you were closely related to.

Georgie, although it may seem improbable, scientists today are doing a study called "The Human Genome Project" where they are discovering by doing analysis on our DNA markers that ALL of the people that are living today come from a very small group of people around 60 - 70,000 years ago.

That's right! We were almost extinct from the planet around then, and nearly did not make it.

There is some truth to it, (Genesis), probably more than modern man is willing to say, and one must have respect for those who wrote down what was once oral tradition...that is, stories handed down from father to son from the beginning of time.

Genesis was an old old story before it was written down, and this I believe most deeply in my heart, that such things are what is written: The first pages that God used on which to write things was the human soul.

1 This is the record of the descendants of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God;
2
he created them male and female. When they were created, he blessed them and named them "man."
3
Adam was one hundred and thirty years old when he begot a son in his likeness, after his image; and he named him Seth.
4
Adam lived eight hundred years after the birth of Seth, and he had other sons and daughters.

God created man (mankind / races ) on the 6th day. After the
7th day He created the last race which was the Jewish race. Yes, Adam and Eve were the very first Jews. So Cain had the female population that was created on the 6th day to choose from. So you see it WAS written about, it even tells that Cain complained that if He (god) threw him (Cain) out of the garden of Eden that whoever saw him would try to kill him (Cain). The whoever in this case are the 6th day creation.
So it is in there , you just have to try to understand what you are reading. Assuming that you read it.

Adam and Eve had many sons and daughters. Cain slew Able and then Seth took Able's place as the good son. They married their sisters and began to multiply on the earth. Their children would be marrying their aunts and uncles and cousins and siblings, etc. When you live in excess of 900 yrs., there is plenty of time to have many offspring and many multi-generational pairings. Adam and Eve would still be having children when their multi-great grandchildren were also having children. Thus, you could marry someone from your own generation level or one that is many times removed from your generation level.

Simple really, Adam and Eve had more kids. It's rather disgusting to think about now, but because there were no imperfections in the DNA, incest was not frowned upon anywhere near as harshly as it is today. That's as simple as it can be stated, even if it is a major eww!

adam and eve weren't real. it's just a story. all the bible is, is a bunch of really unrealistic and silly stories.

you should try reading the bible on your own (not just the parts that your catholic school teaches you), so you can see what a ridiculous book it is.
