I just got my license and my mom's old car, and i noticed it has a SEVERE problem with hydroplaning. I almost got into an accident when i hydroplaned turning onto the busiest road in town. Is there something I can do with my car to prevent this from happening?

Check to make sure your tire pressure is right. you can find the info on the drivers door pillar, near your butt. Also make sure you have good tires with plenty of tread left on them. Here's the best tip; SLOW DOWN!!!!

wet roads are slick as is, but if there hasnt been any rain for awhile, when it does rain, the first 5-10 minutes of it is going to be super slick until the oil washes off. when u are on a wet road, ur car can become a boat. in the right conditions, water gets compressed to the point where the tires basically ride on top of the water, and at this point, u have about as much control of the car as being on a sheet of ice.....zero.
bald or nearly bald tires will hydroplane extremely easy.

rules to stay in 1 piece on wet roads:
slow down. u dont have the traction on wet roads like u do on dry roads
have good tires on it; not bald or nearly bald, and have the air pressure where its supposed to be.
increase following distance....u wont be able to stop anywhere near as quick as dry roads. also, be easy on the brake. u'll wind up sliding alot quicker on wet roads also.

if u think city streets were bad, u aint seen bad yet. roads that are chip and sealed are even more treacherous. now that u've found out what hydroplaning is like, now u know better than acting like the roads are still dry. remember, its the first 5-10 minutes of a rain is where it gets the most hazardous; the drizzley type is the worst. be careful out there. u'll never learn from mistakes if u dont make them. u just got lucky u didnt wreck. i should point out that suv's have a high center of gravity, and if u get into trouble with those, u'll have ur hands full.

1. Make sure your tires have good tread on them. (Most Important)
2. Get tires that are better in the rain
3. Ease on the gas petal. Dont hit it too hard this could make your tires slip.
4. Make the turn at a slower speed then you would on a normal day.

follow the other answers, and also make sure your shocks are still doing there job. They help keep you tire properly planted on the ground.

NEW TIRES for real hydroplaning.

If your brakes locked up, get them fixed (ABS not working???).

Else, don't mash brakes so hard at turns.
