Just remeber that Freedom isn't Free. If you want to really get involved there are many organizations that are always looking for volunteers, such as the USO. Just please respect the rights you have, that people have made the ultimate sacrifce to protect and to try to bring to others around the world. Just appriciate what you have living in this great country. The veterns and current soliders just want to know they are fighting for people and a place worth fighting for!

Veterans Day is coming up, Nov. 11. If your town has a parade or ceremony at the courthouse or cemetary, most do, go. Watch as all the veterans still living, young and old, honor their comrades. Introduce yourself, say "Thank you" and if it suits your desire to maintain conatct with them, ask how you can volunteer to work with them. The VFW, American Legion, and others always need help.
I'm a veyeran of Desert Storm and a simple "Thank you" goes a long long way.

I suppose I can only speak for myself, and not every veteran, but I would have to say the thing that pisses me off the most is seeing people in giant SUVs or other gas guzzlers with "Support our Troops" bumper stickers on their cars. If you really support our troops, you wouldn't be pumping so much money into the economies of people who hate us by buying so much gas from them! I feel much more supported by people who conserve resources, with or without a stupid bumper sticker (most of those bumper sticker sales proceeds don't even go to support troops, its just lining some random dudes pockets).
During the times of the World Wars, when the country went to war, the whole country went to war. Not just the service members fighting. There were massive campaigns to conserve food, electricity, goods. Grow your own veggies and eat less meat so that more food can go to the troops. Donate wood, scrap metal, pantyhose to be used to build armor and weapons and ships. Buy war bonds.
The whole country used to sacrifice when we went to war, the whole country won and lost with the troops, and the whole country earned the victory, or the defeat. Now we have made it possible to go to war and only the service members and their families bear the burden. The rest of us can go about our lives as if nothing has changed, slap a bumper sticker on our cars and feel good about ourselves. But the whole country still earns our victory, and earns our defeat.
Politics are just trends these days. You vote Republican because you think it makes you look tough. You vote Democrat because you think it makes you look intellectual. As a Soldier, they both look exactly the same to me. Let me tell you something, there is a difference between looking tough or smart, and actually being tough or smart.
You want to support the troops? Get a good education and vote without listening to the stereotypes associated with each party.

Abide by the laws, use your freedoms responsibly, and remember that a nation's compassion is reflected in how it treats those who have given much. Don't begrudge disabled veterans their benefits.
