Vista is the NEW operating system that is replacing XP. Microsoft support for XP will quit in two years.
Despite what you hear on this site about Vista being no good, that is not true. The ones that are having trouble with Vista have either installed it incorrectly on PC's that will not support vista or are to stupid to learn something new.
I built a new PC for Vista and It is working great, no problems at all.
Get Vista with a least 1GB of RAM 2 or 3 if you can afford it. Do not get 4gb of RAM, Vista will only recognize 3gb.
Get the biggest hard drive you can. 80GB or bigger.
Get a very good video card with at least 256MB on board RAM.
If you look at the System in Control Panel on a Vista PC, you will see a computer RATING that Vista gives that computer. It is in a range of 1 to 5.
5 being the best. Before you purchase any Vista PC check the rating. Do Not Get anything less than 3.

If you are going to use some older programs, the definitely XP. I have found basically every program to be compatible with XP. Some programs that are supposed to work on Vista don't actually work sometimes. XP requires some third-party programs for better security, but overall it is lighter so it has better performance and compatibility as it is the world's most common OS. If you can find a computer with XP installed (only available on a Vista Business or Ultimate downgrade from specific manufacturers like Dell), then I would go for it. If it costs you another hundred bucks, then I would just get Vista as the consequences are not as bad as wasting a hundred bucks. Windows 7 is supposed to be released in the upcoming months. If I were you, I would first try out the Windows 7 RC and then decide whether it is worth the wait to buy a computer with 7 preinstalled. I have found it to be much faster than Vista and have less hard drive activity starting up compared to XP. If you need a laptop now, then try to get XP, but don't waste too much money on switching the OS. If you can wait, I would consider waiting for Windows 7.

I got one with Vista and i think Vista needs more time to mature because not all software supports Vista.
I wanted to get XP but i didn't so now i am thinking of dual booting Vista with XP.
I just hope Vista fixes a lot of things in their software soon because it is getting on my nerves.
Hope this helps & good luck,

GET XP. Vista is just xp but looks a little bit more fancy and uses 2 times the resources. It is also expensive.

everyone answered to your question is right, dont go for Vista. Its just a fancy look which consumes more memory and reduce the process speed.
Infact, i bought Vista with lot of excitmenet, but then after few bad experience, i down graded my computer to XP.
One more problem with Vista, it dosen't support other applications like Oracle, Java etc...And any other application/product available in market is mostly compatible with XP.
So, my suggestions is go for XP.
