It all depends if you are in America or in some Muslim country, Britain included.. The latter might have you struggle a little, the former, well I'd be surprised if they had any problems!
I myself don't see how anyone should be made to work on a Sunday.

Only if you were up front during your interview with them.
They can not disreminate against your religion but when they asked you if anything would interfer with your job and if you If you said no than they do not have to let you have it off.
If you interveiwed and they were clear there would be weekends than you could be in a hard spot.
Most churches have a service during the week and that might be eaiser to ask off for.

I work in a hospital and we have one RN who says she cannot work on Sundays because of church. Well, duh !
We all would like Sundays off, but its not possible unless everyone stops having heart attacs, babies, gall bladder attacs, car wrecks and everything else under the sun.
Get real! Religion is important to a lot of people. There is more than 1 way to express your faith in Christ. I prefer to express my faith by comforting some poor sould who came to the hospital with having chest pain. Feeding the 95 yr old lady breakfast who outlived all her family, spending time comforting the family with 5 children who just lost their mother to pancreatic cancer. Offering myself to make someone elses life bearable for 1 more day after they tried to committ suicide.
I think your a little hoakie and you just want Sundays off. Believe me, God sees that too.

they suppose to let you go to perform your worship, it is against the law to stop you, discrimination on religious ground is forbiden. this situation can happen only if this type of arrangement are made before you had taken the Job.
if you signed the contract and there is no agreement that you can take Sunday off, then they are right stop you and say no
Question:
did you explain to them that you have commitment to go to church on Sunday before you had accepted the job? if not , then they are entitle to say no I am afraid.

If you made that very clear during your interview and hiring process they should let you off. But let's be real you can work after so be prepared for that when you remind them.
