Shari,
There are lots of reasons why people are here. For example, I'm here mostly to answer questions of people who are seeking God or fellow believers who want help. But at the same time I participate in this forum to help make it more rational and reasonable, try to calm down some of the turmoil and try to make the discussions more about issues and ideas than about bitterness and rivalry.
Others are here because it is a forum where they can vent their anger and frustration. For example, the question you just asked was more or less venting your frustration, although not a severe example. Some people are very upset by Christians, especially, because we believe we know THE truth and some people don't believe that there is only one truth. Others don't believe that the truth we believe in is true at all and that is very upsetting to them because they think we are deluded or ignorant or only pretending to believe what we believe so that we can rule over them because the western world tends to be significantly influenced by Christian principles. Others have had very bad personal experience either with Christian organizations or individual Christians and are upset about that.
Some of the people who attack Christian beliefs do so out of the hope that they can show Christians their error, but many attack out of fear or bitterness or anger because of something that they have experienced.
I remember growing up an agnostic (and YES I was an agnostic though some in this forum have claimed that this could not possibly be the truth, and YES I became an atheist during my college years, again in spite of what others here believe) and I remember that I was very upset when we would be driving along a highway in Pennsylvania and would see a sign at the edge of the woods and roadway that said Jesus Saves. I had the feeling we were driving along in some kind of VooDoo-land or something and felt that if we stopped the car there might be some wild-eyed band lurking in the woods to capture us and hawl us into the woods and do some kind of ritual dance around us and hold us captive. I was only a child at the time and that is honestly how I felt. I did not see that sign as a loving and inviting message, and it probably wasn't, but as an attack or threat. If people have experienced things like that or worse and have experienced it for a long time, they are likely to be pretty hostile to Christians.
Then, of course, there are the spiritual reasons why these attacks come, and here is where I will get all kinds of snide comments or thumbs down, no matter, and that is that Satan is hard at work in this world. Though our atheist friends don't acknowledge him, he is quite capable of firing them up to attack the truth because he would much rather people believe things that aren't true or aren't quite true. Why do you think that Jesus said, "Don't think that I have come to bring peace, but a sword, to turn father against son and brother against brother, etc. etc." There will be no peace on earth until the end and there will be no peace between Christians and non-Christians because Satan will always use whatever he can to disuade people from believing in Jesus. Sorry non-Christians, I respect you and your beliefs but I cannot say yours are true, only Jesus is true.

I think if you believe and you run into someone that doesn't, or is questioning religion, I believe you should step up to the plate for God and what he stands for and answer those that have lost or are trying to find there way.
I'm just an every day person but I have thought about what your talking about since being on this site. I have read alot of things on here regarding people not believing and it saddans me. I think as time goes on you will continue to see a rise in people saying they don't believe.
My belief is that the believers need to be aware of this and not to turn the other cheek towards someone that doesn't believe. Don't get mad or upset with them. Remember how much Jesus was doubted, and how he tried to reach the people. Remember what the desciples were about and how they were to spread the word of God. I think anyone who believes should do the same thing. Teach, don't preach!

Any time a non believer asks a question whether in jest or for real it is an opportunity for us (Christians) to witness for our Lord. They may actually read some of the answers and start to ask questions for real out of a desire to know Christ. We need to respond in such a manner that attracts non believers to seek more not have them tune us out. We cannot tell the Good News if we by our speech turn people away.

I really don't know why anybody besides me does or says anything. We should probably ask the non believers, and since you addressed this question to Christians, I'm sure many non believers will be responding here. That seems to be the way it works on YA - ask for responses from Christians and you'll hear from everybody anyway; ask for responses from atheists, and you'll hear from everybody. It's amazing that so many people butt in and respond, even when they have nothing to contribute, or they want to pick a fight, or try to prove (at least to themselves) that the opposing camp is full of ignorant, misled unfortunates. At least this is all just on line chatter and we don't have to respond if we don't want to, or if we're afraid we might be rude. Why more people don't just leave it alone but dive in head first with rude remarks is beyond my understanding.

Bzzzzzzt. It's a Religion and Spirituality section, NOT a religious section. Learn the difference. ANYONE of ANY belief can discuss the TOPICS of Religion and Spirituality, plus "non believers" are some of the MOST spiritual people on the planet.

Why dont you try asking us directly why we do what you claim, instead of asking someone else why I do the things I do? Or, is your intent to receive a response that we shall find insulting?
If you care to read my questions, you will note that, while "goofy", beneath them they are real, valid questions. We do this with the intent to make you think. Something youre obviously not well equiped for.

I completely agree, Shari! What puzzles me is that there are atheists on this board, goading Christians and people of other faiths. Why do they bother if they don't believe in God? It sure doesn't make any sense. And they're the ones who think they are LOGICAL! LOL!!

Uh, why don't you make a cohesive statement? Also, this is the "religion" section, not the "Christian" section. Atheists have as much a right to come to the section as evangelicals have a right to come to the biology section. Rant all you want, but you will still end up looking like a fool.

There is a lot of hostility there on both sides. Some people are venting. Others might be entertaining themselves. Other just might want to provoke as the best way to get responses, which sometimes works. Most of us feel defensive, as well.
