This will explain about the use of this in food additives.
P.S Before you ask, the brown smarties are not made from dung beetles.

The Conchineal beetle has been used as a red food colouring for years, so if Nestle use that red dye (as it's natural) then quite possibly. But so do LOADS of other products

Well.... Yes - they use Cochineal as a natural colouring. If you read how it is made - it is basically insects. Smarties arent Vegetarian or Kosher! It even states on the Nestle website that Smarties arent Veggie so they must have a bit of something in 'em!

According to Wikipedia they still use it!

Correct, but I'm sure that a spokesperson from nestle said that they actually stopped using the crushed beetles to make the red colour for the shells. Oh well, they're still tasty!

Where have you been? It's the cochineal beetle used extensively in food colouring around the world. You've probably eaten it for years without knowing it. Has it effected your health?

Cochineal is certainly made from squished beetles I am afraid...but loads of things have gelatine in and that is made from bones and other animal bits. I think it's just best to stick to things that say they are veggie!

One of the red dyes is made from a bug, yes. M&M's are made with the same red coloring as well, and a host of other foods AND cosmetics.
