do the merit badges have to be earned in your council or can you earn them elsewhere. My step son is enrolled in Boyscouts here in Ohio and working towards his 1st class so he can goto Philmont. Is he able to work on these merit badges in a different state when visiting his mother?

Hello Mom:

The merit badges can be completed in either council, but you will need to have documentation. If your Scout works on the same badge in two different locations, he will need to verify the work with the merit badge counselor. This can be done with a notebook, pictures, or for craft-type merit badges, the project themselves. If he starts a badge in Ohio, then goes to visit his other family, and completes the badge, the merit badge counselor of the other council can sign the blue merit badge card. If he attends Scout meetings in the place where his other family is located, and this is in a different Council, he should co-register in this council as well. It should only cost a dollar for the paperwork, and it will be needed if he works towards his Eagle rank.

Keep on Scoutin'

You will need to verify it with the scoutmaster or person in charge of merit badges but as long as all the requirements are documented (fill out worksheets, have activities signed off by an adult. Pictures help too if applicable.) it should be fine. It is not where they are completed but THAT they complete them. You can find worksheets at http://www.meritbadge.com/home.htm
