If you mean are they a decent rifle, YES for the money. Yugo SKS's are pretty much all that are being imported lately so it's not like there is a big list to choose from. If you get a new one that is unissued, they are equivelent to any of the Norinco better quality rifles banned by the Clinton administration.
*NOTE They are not as inexpensive to shoot as they were a few years back as ammunition in 7.62 X 39 has gone up in price ....

I prefer the Russians simply because the Yugo is a lot heavier. There is more metal in the receiver of the Yugo plus you have that monster grenade launcher up front.
Since the Yugos are the only ones available from distributors right now, they serve their purpose well and that launcher can be removed, although not easily.
The SKS is a simple, rugged and robust carbine. It will take the kind of abuse that no American military rifle or AK ever could stand, and keep on firing.
It is one of the simplest semi autos to break down and understand and equally as simple to put back together.
You can fire hundreds of rounds between cleaning and I have only ever once experienced a slam fire and that was from not cleaning the packing Cosmoline off the firing pin.
Any problems like stovepiping can easily be solved by changing a few inexpensive parts. Used models should have all the springs changed out....this usually clears up most operation issues.
With nearly factory new and unissued Yugos available for $50 or so dollars more that used, that's definitely the way to go.
There is a huge selection of aftermarket parts and accessories for the SKS, and honestly most of these are junk, particularly the hi cap mags and folding stocks.
I have a Russian that has a stock butt extender, a tuned trigger group and a Williams sight on it and it has taken many desert four legged pests....plus it's taken more abuse than any rifle should be subjected to the past 15 years, bouncing around in the back of the Jeep.
Again, get a near new unissued one for a few extra dollars, don't settle for beat up, get your dealer to order one from Century Arms, they have excellent grade ones now.

Not in my opinion the 56 Simonov (SKS) was designed in the 40's and 50's for use by basic Russian infantrymen predating mass use of the AK, the Russian versions are ok, but still kind of a clunker. The Eastern bloc countries as well as China developed their own models, they were designed to be used a couple of times then junked on the battlefield. They shoot the 7.62 x .339 just like the AK but for power, performance and long term use you cant beat a Kalashnikov. Just my opinion, also stay away from the Yugo and Bulgarian ammo unless you like stripping and cleaning your piece every twenty minutes.

The best rifle out there for just having fun. They are reliable. Their ammo is cheap and easy to find. They are reasonably priced. Replacement parts are everywhere. They are easy to take apart. They are easy to clean. They are easy to fix. They rarely ever need to be fixed. They can take down deer at modest ranges. They are cheap enough that you can toss them in the bed of your truck without a second thought. You can rest them on benches without worrying about scratching them.
They are great, I love them and have several.

I own one also,it's not my favorite or least favorite rifle.mine likes to stovepipe alot,no matter what ammo I use ,or how much I clean it,plus it has a draw back of accuracy at long ranges, but it is a basicly solid rifle with pretty simple breakdown procedures, also try to find one already decosmo'd for ya,that stuff can be a bear.

I love mine.
Clean it after 300 rounds down range and you'll never have a problem. If you don't clean it? The firing pin will lodge forward and it will "hangfire" and go fully auto for 10 rounds.
So buy one. Clean it as needed. And enjoy the heck out of owning it. I do.

A functional simple rifle that needs little or no maintenance and goes off when the trigger is pulled. One of the best examples of a KISS (keep it simple, stupid) rifle.

They're alright for the price... I think they're a little finicky and require a bit more work than I like to put into a gun.
They'll do the job (but there are better pieces out there).
