Great question. Sounds like an imponderable.

They were using the tops of Japanese soldiers skulls as cooking pots, because metal was so scarce and was needed for the war effort. SO, they needed to wear helmets, you know, to keep their brains attached to their spinal cords so they could control the plane. The helmets were made out of metal too, but they didn't strap them on, and they would go tossing onto the other side of the ship and into the water. Later, after the attack was done, Japanese Midget submarines (made out of BAMBOO, not metal), would go to the scene of the attack and find the pilots helmet (usually with the brain still in it) and bring it back to the Japanese carrier or land base, so it can be used again. The next pilot to use the helmet got to feast on the previous pilots brain, along with a little Sake. Mmmmm, Mmmmm, brains and Sake, nothing like it.

I know this sounds funny but it was so they would not catch a cold. All of those leather jackets and fleece lined jackets nad hats and hoods are designed to keep the pilot warm since it gets cold as heck in those old planes at higher altitudes.

It's nice to know that their mothers made sure they were dressed properly before committing suicide and mass murder. I'm sure a few of them decided to become heroes in the heat of battle and had intitally hoped to return home victorious.

Bonzai!

Good Luck!

you are wrong, nobody wore helmets in those days!!!, pilots in those days used a leather hood, helmets came later with jet powered planes during the Korean war in the 50's

For radio communication - and for the oxygen supply, which clips to the helmet. After all, they didn't want to pass out and crash on route to the enemy. Some took it off before starting their final dive at the opposing forces.
