"It's his body and should be his choice. If he wants it done when he is a little older, I would have no problem aranging and paying for that. But it's so perminant that if I decide wrong now, I don't want to have to explain that mistake later in life."

Your position on "circumcision" is commendable.
It certainly is his body and it must be his choice.

wolf_whatever: Perhaps a boy doesn't want to be part of a primitive desert tribe with it's stone age mutilation.

We in the modern world have a new invention, it is called soap and water. It is very powerful stuff it can even clean a boy's penis or a girls labia (although cleaning those is trickier).

We also educate our children that should they decide to be sexually active they must practice safe sex and use condoms, and to avoid going to Africa and having sex with HIV infected prostitutes.

With soap and water and education there is no reason to mutilate baby boys, should a man later think that is something he wants he can get it done then.

Bravo! Circumcision is a permanent alteration. One can be baptized and later change religion without any physical mutilation taking place. The same, alas, is not true of circumcision.

Since this is in R&S, let me share the thoughts of my grandfather, a very strong Christian. He said circumcision was an insult to God, that people who cut their infants are saying that God did a lousy job of designing men's bodies and that they are wiser than God.

That was exactly the position my parents took with me. If you don't circumcize your son, you give him the choice of whether he wants to be circumcized or uncircumcized. If you do circumcise him, however, it is very difficult (if not impossible!) to get uncircumcised.

The only people would object to this idea would be:

(1) Religious Jews who believe circumcizing an eight day old child is a command from God.

(2) *Certain* Muslims who think their faith commands the circumcision of boys.

(3) People who wrongly believe not circumcizing the child will lead to all sorts of health problems...

Depends on the reason for the circumcision. I personally agree with that outlook, but I am not Jewish and, hence, have no reason to look at circumcision as a sign of faith or a mark of community.

Beautiful position. I wish all parents were like that.

wolf btw you are completely incorrect regarding your theories about spreading AIDS (it's in the semen, not foreskin) and cleanliness (it's easier to keep clean with a bit of skin over it, what could be dirtier than exposing the glans to clothing dust and air permanently?)

And yes, even children born into Muslim families should get a choice about whether they want to become Muslim when they become of age, no?

I disagree. In Islam and Judaism it is a direct command and law from God to have your infant son circumcised at birth. It is part of the Covenant that God made with Ibrahim(PBUH*) and his descendants. It keeps the penis cleaner if there is no skin over the head and it cuts down on infections and diseases like HIV and AIDS. It also lowers the chance of men spreading or contracting AIDS. It's also better for your health if your circumcised. In Islam we have to pray 5 times a day and it's hard for a man to clean himself well if he has a piece of skin that can get dirt and infections under it.
