My Sheltie tries her best to talk to me all the time. She will bring a toy to me, lay it at my feet and give a little woof like she is saying here it is...now throw it. If she is bored she will lay down on the floor and grunt like a "I'm bored sigh" If I ask her if she wants to go for a walk but we don't go out the door at that exact second then she will start crying and whining like a little baby...it is so cute...or she will throw her head straight up in the air and start howling. Yes, what you are hearing about Shelties is true.

Yes, Most Shel ties are quite verbal. I think it also depends on how much you talk to them. I have a Shel tie. He amazes me with what he can do. He "talks" all the time. If you do something he does not like he will wing his head, and bark as if to say "no". He always wants to give his 2 cents worth in a conversation. If I leave him for a few hrs or forget to give him food he will give me a lecture!
He is living with my mom now. My mom has arthritis and is wheel chair bound. She has some complications from a hip surgery. Anyway, the sheltie has become her "personal service dog". He will bark and warn her when people are coming to the door, pick up the phone or the TV remote, get things for her (like shoes), and carry on a conversation.
I miss him but I feel that he is happy helping my mom.
He even tried to kick me out of the house when I was visiting one time! I was carrying boxes from the back room. He (Chip) likes to lie in the hallway. When I went into the room, he was not there,but when I returned with boxes he was lying there and I accidentally stepped on his paw. (I got a huge lecture! and he walked over to the door and nudged the door nob with his nose.
So, yes, I think there is truth to this rumor! Shelties are very smart dogs.
Shelties, don't know that they are dogs! I call mine a human in fur!

I'm a new sheltie owner, but my sheltie hardly makes any sounds. All of the sheltie's I know are barkers and whiners because there so excited to do something. Sorry I am no help.

I used to have shelties and never found them to be particularly vocal, they would bark when the doorbell rang but other than that were fairly quite.Dogs are like people individuals;;;
