It could be one of two problems. Your transmission could be showing signs of wear or you have a broken motor mount. Given that it only happens in one gear I'd check for the motor mount first. You'll need another person with you when you do this.
Open the hood on the car. Have your helper get in and start the car. Have them shift from park into drive. Watch the engine as they are doing that. See if it raises up quite a bit. If it does you have a broken motor mount. Usually the one that sits just below the radiator and needs to be replaced right away. If you let it go, it will also crack your radiator.
If the engine doesn't move much take the car to the tranny shop and tell them what it's doing. They'll know what to look for when servicing it.

i don't see where anyone asked if you have checked the fluid level lately, after the car has warmed up from driving it a good half hour first. it may seem so simple, but that should be your first check! too much or too little fluid isn't good for the tranny. you can also sniff the fluid and see if it smells burnt or not. and it should be a clear reddish color, not black or dark brown, either. have you noticed any spots on the driveway where you park the car? is the engine and tranny all oily on the drivers side of the engine compartment? these would be a few clues to a leak. just a few thoughts for you to consider before going into a tranny shop and getting ripped off.

Not likely to be a motor mount. Those clunck on acceleration from the stop, not just from first to second shift. Sounds like the 1-2 accumulator is sticking. A trans flush may help it, or an additive, like B&M slickshift, or something of high quality. If all else fails, live with it or get the trans rebuilt.

Transmission shops are notorious for ripping of women and or anyone who walks in there shop.
I bet most shops will call it a total rebuild no matter what the problem is and thats a $1200-2000 bill.
If it were me i would try some additives that help bad slippage and fix other problems before i spent that kind of money.

When was the last time your van had a MAJOR tune-up?? If you don't know your best bet would be to start from there. Backfiring is caused by mulitple problems with the vehicle, timing is one but lack of maintanance is another. Get your MAJOR tune-up (spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor, spark plug wires, ETC...) done first and then see if you have the same problem, it's going to be a process of elimination. GOOD LUCK!!!

Could be a sticking shift solenoid. I would have the fluid power flushed. This cures alot of problems.

Find a good transmission shop and have it evaluated as quickly as possible. It sounds like you may have an issue with your torque converter stall speed..

Fords can't make a automatic trans for 1.
Just take it to a garage if you don't know how to tear about the tranny and look at it.
