No. Nobody should have to spend an eternity in hell. Sadly, some people will go there of their own accord.
God cuts people quite a bit of slack on this, you have to work pretty hard to spend an eternity in hell
Edit:
The little scenario you provided about someone breaking into your home and you having to kill him or be killed - This is not something you need to be forgiven for, or something you would go to hell for. Killing someone in self-defense is not a sin, nor is killing someone to save someone else's life. The Biblical injunction against killing is actually more properly translated as "Thou shalt not murder". Sometimes killing is justified in certain situations. As it says in Ecclesiastes, "There is a time to kill, and a time to give life".

We should never sin for anyone - family friends, wife, children because we owe our love to God first. Here is what the Catholic encyclopeida says:
"Our personal salvation is to be preferred to all else. We are never justified in committing the slightest sin for the love of any one or anything whatsoever, nor should we expose ourselves to spiritual danger except in such cases and with such precautions as would give us a moral right to, and guarantee of, God's protection."
The situation that you talk about may be self defense, protecting your family, since your not intentionally murdering this person. But we should always try not to use anger and always look for a peacefull way so that all people can live in a situation like the one you described.

Well, thankfully, the Lord has set up His plan so that I can be with my family forever...I don't have to do any sacrificing of that sort.. He did that already.
As for your scenario - I think God would make an allowance if you shot someone and you were trying to save your family.

It doesn't make any difference what I'm willing to do, GOD is the one who will make the decision on where I spend eternity.

It isn't possible for me to make a sacrifice that would benefit anyone else, spiritually speaking. Heck, I couldn't even do that for myself.
Only Jesus could.
