Throw away everything that is broken, blah, and bent. Pretend that you have to move and you can only take certain things with you. When you are down to the basics you will have organization all at once.

Go room to room and get rid of everything you do not need, is broken, not necessary etc...be quite brutal; decluttering is always the best place to start!

Organise your rooms with as clean a slate as possible, meaning, you should only have large items to work with - don't let little bits and pieces clutter your mind and space when you're trying to reorganise furniture etc. You can add your bits and pieces once you've placed all the big stuff.

Put like-with-like and then find a place for it or put it in the place it's supposed to go.

If you find you require more storage, then look at some options for how you will store or file these items.

If something is not necessary for daily or seasonal use consider removing it from your home and storing it in a garage, attic or cupboard that is rarely used. This way it's not cluttering space you access regularly.

Always make sure you have a storage container of some sort to put little bits into rather than just having a miscellanous pile. Every now and then you can pull out the container and resort it. This works if you're not naturally inclined to put things away the moment you discard it. The best habit to get into however, is to 'file' something in it's proper place once you have finished with it.

Get into the habit of regularly discarding those things you really do not need.

Throw everything away and start from scratch..... a little extreme I know. You can also just take everything outside and only bring in what you have used within the last 6 months. If you haven't used it, you probably don't need it.
