I’m looking for a good protective camera backpack that I could take on everyday travel. Something good for all weather it case it rains ( in Hawaii or other tropical areas) or if I take it to the snow. I carry a canon xt, 10-22mm, 24-105mm, 50mm along with batteries, lens hood etc. big enough to fit my current equipment and possibly a light jacket or tiny purse. Nothing too big, bulky or heavy, as I’m only 5’1. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What you want is a Tamrac Adventure 6/7/9 series bag. It will hold 2-3 lenses and a body in the bottom compartment and you have the top compartment for everything else.

Also its a good idea to check out camera bags in person BEFORE ordering them online (they are usually cheaper online). So you need to find a good camera store and take some of your current gear along and see how they all fit.

I just bought a backpack for my camera. I decided to get the Lowepro Orion Trekker II. It has a top compartment for a light sweater or jacket and camera stuff such as memory cards, cleaning cloth or brush, etc. I've managed to fit a couple of filters, two memory cards, a wireless remote, my sweater, a 350 pg book, a small umbrella, and a bottle of water. The bottom compartment houses a camera with a mid-size lens and it also has separators in case you want to carry a couple more lenses and your charger. I have a Nikon D80 with a 18-135 mm zoom lens and it fits perfectly. The bag cost me about $60 and I'm more than happy with it. It's also water proof: I was out in New York City one day and it started pouring. I didn't have an umbrella, so I just had to hope that the bag did work and it worked perfectly fine...not a single drop anywhere near my camera.
Anyway, I think this bag would work perfectly. I'll put a link to the bag below (you should look at Amazon or B&H Photo Video to see if it's cheaper there).
Definitely consider a Lowepro, though.

Probably not a good idea to double the function, at least not in this case. Why would you? I mean bags aren't all that expensive and if you put things that would normally go into a diaper bag in a bag you also use for a camera you risk doing damage to the camera. A dedicated camera bag is the only real safe way to do this business. Why would you risk your camera to save a couple of bucks?

I just got a Tamrac Velocity backpack, because I wanted one that I could access the equipment quickly by just swinging it around from back to front. I didn't want to always to have to put the case down (like with most backpack cases) to get at the equipment. The size was just right for me and perfect for my recent two-week trip around China.

That being said, I think you might like the Lowepro Slingshot series.

They also have the swing-around access design, plus a weatherproof all-weather cover. Check out the three sizes.

I hope you find this helpful.

Go to shutterbug.com and search for their article on camera backpacks. It was in the Aug. 2007 issue.

If you're planning to use your camera in wet conditions you might want to check cameraarmor.com and bonicadive.com and look at the protective covers they offer. If you think one will keep your camera dry and safe then its a good investment.

I'd stick with a Lowepro AW series pack . they make them in various sizes. They have a built in rain pancho to protect your gear in the rain. www.lowepro.com I've got the nature trekker which would be overkill for you. The mini trekker is a good one.
