i know it translates into "in the country" but is there another meaning it can translate to?

"in the country" is turning out to be in the wrong context over and over again.

If it's the wrong context, why don't you give us a context?

As someone said "El País" is the name of a Spanish newspaper. Actually, there are several newspapers called "El País" in different Spanish speaking countries.

Apart from that, "el país" means just that... "the country".
