You couldn't go wrong with any of the artists at Lal Hardys Mew Wave Tattoo in North London. It is ranked as one if not the best studio in England .He has artists specialising in various styles so you would find someone there to give you exactly what you want.Lal himself is awesome and has created many 'dark' designs. He is the preferred artist for many celebs. Be warned there are waiting lists for all the artists .I always have Silvia Zed as she understands perfectly my needs and we work together on the designs I want and her portrait work is wonderful.People travel from all over the country and abroad to get a tattoo here so the wait is worth it.

For dark evil custom tattoos I go to Martin Blythe at Ta Moko Tattoo in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. He specialises in black & grey tattoos with themes like horror, demons, skulls, metamorphosis, Japanese mythology and unusual designs. I am getting a leg piece themed around world religions from him with gods like Odin, Kokopelli, Mictlantecuhtli, Cernunnos, Selene, Set and others. All done in black and grey. I am also getting a sleeve from him themed around demons from various books of fantasy art. He has over 20 years experience and will do work outside his normal range if requested (last week he was commissioned to do a new-school backpiece themed around Elvis Presley in bright colours). He is not the only artist I get tattoos from. I go to Sakura at Old Town Tattoo in Edinburgh for traditional Eastern style work. And I also have gone to America for two specific tattoos. But as I explained he is very good at the style you seem to want. If you look up Ta Moko Harrogate on Facebook you can see a selection of his portfolio.

Steve "Inker" Gabriel is absolutely the best. He did my first in '80 and I've made the mistake of using other so called "great artists" a few times and wish I traveled to go back to Guidline Tattoo http://www.guidelinetattoos.com

zaza ink in west boylston, ma! No lie, they are amazing, but are booked like months in advance! I got lucky and got in during a cancellation. The owner is an awesome portrait tattoo artist! Amazing!

Best in CT is Steve Gabriel at Guideline. He runs a very low key, old school kinda shop however....he's a "biker" type that doesn;t put up with any crap, and couldn't care less about the "internet" world

Remember that tattoing was banned in nearby states of NY and MA since the 60s and lifted only within last decade. Steve has had his place in CT since 1971!
