All I know is the peace since I found truth in Criss Angel.

Who is like him?
Who can compete with him?

I think anybodies beliefs should be open to insult. But one should insult the beliefs not the person who holds the beliefs. Maybe if more people had insulted the beliefs of NAZI's for instance we might have avoided world war 2.

It is hard to insult atheist's beliefs because the only thing atheists share is a lack of god belief. And there is no credible reason to believe in gods.

It seems that there are more "in the closet atheists" around these days so mocking the un-believer isn't as popular.

I know one atheist who goes to church each Sunday because the church provides social services for his kids and contacts for his business. Other than me and his sister he's silent about his beliefs. Several other atheists I know are outstanding members of their communities "that go through the motions" so they can get along with their religious neighbors and avoid the wrath of the zealots.

There are plenty atheists out there but it's difficult to insult them because they have removed themselves from the debate and live happily on their own.

Also don't confuse the people who want to keep church and state separated from atheists. Most of the separatist crowd has plenty of jealous religious groups who are out to thwart the efforts of other religious groups.

If insulting the beliefs of anyone, or indeed the act of insulting is socially acceptable, I imagine that there are degrees of acceptability, but a great deal depends upon the condition clause.

Insulting anyone's personal belief, whether in God or as an atheist, is totally unacceptable. I am a practising Christian and would not dream of insulting anyone who has different beliefs from mine. After all, Mary herself said to the visionaries at Medjuorie "In God, there are no religions, no divisions. Men make the divisions. You must esteem all men"

Personally from observation of "real" society it doesn't seem acceptable to insult anyone's beliefs.

However, in academic realms, and especially on this forum? It seems the exact opposite. It is extremely acceptable to *insult* Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and any other theistic religion.

I'm on the fence personally, I get both sides and have yet to make up my mind, but from what I see on this forum, it's funny for the atheists on this forum to claim they feel insulted, considering how many "stupid Christians" posts there are. If 'stupid' isn't an insult, i don't know what is.

EDIT: for example, those who have insulted athiests on this very question...

"Because atheists by definition do not have any morals."

"Atheism is a bizarre belief system and it has no place in religion and spirituality."

Received a plethora of "thumbs downs"

yet these...

"Atheists seem to have a better educated come back to insults"

"seems that way. Why do people feel we are stupid when we are the ones who don't believe that there's an invisible man who lives in the sky who can read your mind, and he loves you but if you don't believe he exists without any evidence he'll torture you forever. Or that a cosmic Jewish zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in all humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree. Yeah. Ok."

"Hypocritical christians think its ok to insult everyone who isn't part of their cult. Then claim to be loving, tolerant, kind"

"With god gibberish? Hahahahahahahahaha"

Recieve praise.

I think it is definately more socially acceptable, again on this forum, in our modern world that is so scientifically driven, to insult believers than non-believers

"ignorant" "Hypocritical" "irrational" "stupid" these are not observations, they are insults.

Whatever guys, duke it out all you like, but watch your own insult-tossing and acceptance of others insults before attempting to draw conclusions about the other side.

I think it is difficult to insult an Atheist's beliefs. They only have one common belief. From what I have learned they only agree on one thing and that is there is no God or gods. Each one has his or her own set of unique beliefs.
I too believe it is wrong to insult anyone. But I do prefer Atheists (the polite ones) to Agnostics. At least they don't sit on the fence.

It is about as socially acceptable to insult Pagan beliefs as atheist beliefs....

Thinking people don't find it acceptable BUT both happen all the time because of knee-jerk religious fundamentalists.....

It's not acceptable to insult anyone's beliefs. Disagreeing is allowed I think. But there's never any need to be rude. Insulting someone is a defensive tactic that belies insecurity.

Socially acceptable insults? What a concept.

Definitely- why should I have to acknowledge religious holidays for example? Where are my rights?

Why? Because philosophy, logic and debate is given less importance than superstition and supposition. Maybe that's why the world is in such a mess- reason has been abandoned.
