Islamic culture seems to be hyper sensitive to any offense to the faith. Cartoons cause mass protests that turn violent. Cartoons! If someone really goes after the faith, makes an anti-Islam film or book, they can be openly marked for death. The reason I have little respect for Islam and the Islamic world is because they seem to have so little humility and tolerance. An open and critical mind can get you killed when it comes to Islam. It is the death of reason. I am not a Christian but at least Christianity has reformed and modernized enough to allow Christian societies to tolerate multiple views of religion and life. Try preaching Christianity on the streets of Saudi Arabia and see how tolerant and open minded they are. Muslims are constantly bragging about Islam being the fastest growing religion, that is because it's an unfair and unbalanced situation. Convert to Islam in America and Europe and you may face bigotry ect. but you can practice your faith freely. Convert to Christianity in Saudi Arabia or Afghanistan and you are either going to have to leave the country or die! Islam must modernize and change, otherwise it will make tolerance intolerable.

I won't respond to all of your common sense statements but I will say a few things...firstly Muhammed was a merchant, he travelled broadly and met many kinds of people. It is not unreasonable to assume he met Christians and Jews during his life and perhaps had close business dealings with them. Perhaps he was curious about them and thier religion, perhaps he asked them questions and listened to stories from the bible or torah. You have to realize that in this time most people were illiterate, so the main way to trasmit religious information was through story telling. None of us were there, we don't know how knowledgeable Muhammed was about Judaism or Christianity befopre he had his alleged revelation. Secondly, saying that Muhammed had to be a prophet because why else would he do any of the rituals ect. of islam is not logical. Why did Buddha practice meditation and teach his followers all of Buddhisms practices if he was not really enlightened? Why did John Smith claim to have had his revelation and create the book of Mormon if it were not real? There is no difference between these examples and Muhammed except for your faith in it. You believe Muhammed was all that you have been told he was because you have faith, because it was taught to you. There is no real evidence that it was real. Followers lie, tell half truths and exagerate. They often believe that telling a little lie is not wrong if it furthers what they believe in. Unless you were there in person, standing next to muhammed as he had his experieces...you don't know for sure about anything. Perhaps all of the rituals you practice, everything you believe, was simply invented slowly by a very creative man that spent years hearing stories from Christians, seeing his own society following empty and primitive pagan religions. Perhaps he decided to make a new religion for his own people, using the other religions as a starting point. Men have created religions for thier own purposes in the past, and they still do today.

If anyone wants to talk critically about ANY religion they should know about it. In other words study up on the religion or religions and not pick and choose what you want to believe the religion is about. I've read so many posts on this site about people who haven't a clue about Islam, Christianity and Judaism and ask absurd questions just to rile people up and have people only be one sided on the topics...and say hateful things b/c either their parents hate the religion for no reason, or they were taught the wrong [extremist views] teachings of the faith and/or they just hate a religion b/c of how the media makes up things and makes people only hear the extremists views and not the views of the normal religious followers.
And they should speak...or in this case type... intellectually and not type up a bunch on nonsensical gibberish...

Well I am in all honestly not that educated about Islam so yes - I tend to dislike discussing topics of which I do not have a lot of knowledge.

No. The Christians actually scare me more. It doesn't stop me, either way. I think the number of death threats from Christians outweighs the number from Muslims by an order of magnitude.

A short jaunt through Y! Answers, YouTube, LiveVideo or any number of sites should give you a pretty clear answer to that question: "Uh, no."
