They do it to reduce the smell. I've been in 4 star hotels that do the same thing. It cools it and keeps slow stream of water going down the drain. I happened to be in the bathroom when an attendant came in to refill the ice. I asked him and and that's the answer he gave me.
You don't see it as much these days with the automatic flush toilets.

Some taverns put ice in the urinals to keep guys from peeing all over the place. With the ice in there:1) The guys are going to be looking at it while they pee kind of like cheerios in the toilet when potty training little boys so the urine will go where it belongs. 2) having the ice in the urinals will help keep the urine from splattering all over the place.

because they don't have enough ice box to put their ice in and later in the night they will use the ice and place them in your drinks!!! hehe just kidding! taverns place ice in they urinals because(and these are FACTS) 4 out of 5 men flush the urinals after they use it, peeing on ice would melt the ice into water making it less stinky(more or less like automatically flushing the urinal), by the way do you know that 62% of males do not wash their hands after peeing? so when you shake hands with men you meet it's like holding the penis of 3 out of 5 men? yuck!!?

the real reason we put ice in urinals is to help cut the smell because a lot of guys don't flush, as the ice melts it is running the pee down the drain. It also gives guys something to do i.e. see who can melt the most ice.

They don't do that for any purpose. Guys throw their drinks down them or maybe somebody empties some ice to drain a container. Funny joke, though! I'll have to check my margarita's next time!
