I have rescued a 16/17wk doberman, he has never been house trained, the people that had him let him go where ever and when ever he wanted, how do i re train him, it is driving us mad, i have been taking him out every 30 min, saying go toilet, and praising and giving treats when goes, washing and spraying the area after he does goes to remove scent, Saying no and trying to get him outside if i catch him going inside(he just looks at me and finishes anyway)everything i can find i have tried as in "puppy house training"
does he need a different way because he is older?
can i break this habit?

Okay, so he's never been trained ... he's a rescue dog adjusting to a new home ... and he's still a puppy. He's probably a little freaked out and doesn't understand what you want.

I'd start from scratch and assume he knows nothing. Get a crate and use it. Crate-training, done correctly, is the fastest and surest way to housetrain a dog. I won't give details on how to do it here, but there's plenty of information out there for you to read.

The key is to be consistent, to establish a routine (and that doesn't mean every 30 minutes!) and to never let him out of your sight when he's out of his crate but inside the house. You can leash him and tie the leash to your belt ... just let him follow you around the house. Be sure you take him outside first thing in the morning, after meals, and always after a nap.

It takes time and patience, though. Never punish him for an accident, but always praise him when he gets it right. Might help if you take him to the same spot outside for potty-breaks, so he'll associate that place with peeing there and getting lots of praise when he does! Just don't give up on him, because it's not his fault his previous owners weren't responsible. Good Luck!

I have a 10 year old male doberman. Most dominate dog I ever had !!! Best dog I've ever had !!!!
Nothing to do with age. Not a "habit " to break. I bet He's marking his new territory. I think your doing everything correct.
When my Dobe was a pup I was in an apt. The girl up stair said ah he's so cute , you need a night off, let me take him upstairs and you can have some peace. GREAT !!! She came knocking on the door about 15 min's later because he was marking EVERYTHING. He lifted his leg and marked the dog trainer( I swear , true story ). Take him to Petco, Pet smart - same thing. Take him to the shop ( office ) - hey guess what - same thing. He's got a new home and needs EVERYTHING living thing in the area to know, that I"m bad, and I'm here baby.... Keep doin' what your doin' - it takes time. Dobermans especially a male is a dominate breed. You will see - he will keep testing you and testing you. Takes quite a while for the "puppy " to get out of him too. I swear my dog didn't settle down for 5 years and everyone I met told me that. Boy they were right !!! Greatest breed in the world !!! LOVE and ATTENTION and PATIENCE. Need any help e-mail me michaelgollatz@yahoo.com

Most dogs don't have full bladder control until they are close to 10 months old - so you will need to train it.

Do you have a crate?

Here is information on how to potty train using a crate that might help you! And any dog os any age is potty trained the same way - you just have to be more patient with a puppy (under the age of 2).

Also it may take some dogs 60 or more repititions to really learn something well. Patience... it will happen if you are consistant.

When you're now not residence, take into account crating him. Most puppies have an aversion to getting rid of wherein they ought to sleep. However, considering he was once in quarantine, this would possibly not paintings for him. How lengthy earlier than mattress are you feeding him? Most puppies have got to do their trade approximately an hour when they conclude consuming. If there is not anything getting in, there must now not be some thing going out. Some puppies truthfully desire a "double poo" possibility. Feed him a minimum of 2 hours earlier than mattress - placed his meals down, some thing he eats in 10-quarter-hour is what he will get. About an hour after he finishes consuming, take him out for a thirty minute stroll - if that suggests going for walks across the block 3 instances, then do this. You would discover he is going poo a pair instances on that stroll.

THe crate is a VERY good idea. Try to take him out when he shows signs of needing to go but BEFOR he starts (most dogs sniff around in circle before peeing). If you have a hard time keeping track of him enough to notice him sniffing you can try the umbilical cord approch - leash him to your belt loop - that way he can't sneak off behind the sofa.
