If Jesus was crucified and died to pay the "full" penalty for our sin, why does this place called "purgatory" exist?
Jesus died to pay the penalty for all of our sins, and once they are forgiven, they are all forgiven (Colossians 1:14; Acts 10:43).

(Mud on our clothes?)
Romans 3:21-26:
"But now God has shown us a different way of being right in his sight - not by obeying the law but by the way promised in the Scriptures long ago. We are made right in God's sight when we trust in Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this same way, no matter who we are or what we have done. For all have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard. Yet now God in his gracious kindness declares us not guilty. He has done this through Christ Jesus, who has freed us by taking away our sins. For God sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sins and to satisfy God's anger against us. We are made right with God when we believe that Jesus shed his blood, sacrificing his life for us. God was being entirely fair and just when he did not punish those who sinned in former times. And he is entirely fair and just in this present time when he declares sinners to be right in his sight because they believe in Jesus."

We are justified, declared righteous, at the moment of our salvation. Justification does not make us righteous, but rather pronounces our righteousness. Our righteousness comes from placing our faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. His sacrifice covers our sin, allowing God to see us as perfect and unblemished. Because as believers we are in Christ, God sees Christ's own righteousness when He looks at us. This meets God's demands for perfection; thus, He declares us righteous--He justifies us.
Romans 5:18-19 sums it up well: "Yes, Adam's one sin brought condemnation upon everyone, but Christ's one act of righteousness makes all people right in God's sight and gives them life.

To Travelling to Ninevah. Not only "mud on our clothes" but "age to come"? Are you grasping at straws here. How does age to come mean purgatory? I am really trying hard to understand this doctrine, but I just can't find a single Biblical reference for it.
Did you read what Mark R. had to say about your references?
Anyway, thanks for the effort in answering in such detail. I appreciate your answer along with everyone elses.
Blessings: Kait.

I'm sorry, but I can't remain silent.
Traveling to nineve, it is impossible to read purgatory into any of your quotes. Matt. 22 is a parable that tells us that on the last day, if we are not ready we will face only eternal damnation. Matt 18:21... tells us that if we don't forgive those who trespass against us as God forgives us, hell is our reward. In The Revelation of St. John, "nothing unclean" is just that.
We must let Scripture interpret Scripture, and try to take everything in Context.
Remember; the whole Gospel tells us that we are "washed by the blood of the Lamb", even the good thief who repented at the last minute and hung on the cross beside our Lord did not have to be purified, Christ told him "today you will be with me in Paradise.
This brings me to our friend; Idahomike. If the thief who repented in the 11th hour goes right to Paradise, so will all believers.
The Bible also tells us that All will be bodily raised on the last day, and all will face judgment. The faithful will be found "not guilty" on the merits of Christ alone, while those who rejected Christ will join the devil in the lake of fire.
There is however a reference in the Deutro-Canonical books (I believe it's 2 Maccabees but I am not sure), and even that one has to be read rather loosely.
The Paradise of the Old Testament is the Heaven of the New. Before Christ was born those who believed in Gods promise of a Savior or Messiah already believed in Christ and are therefore Christians! If those Christians can go to Paradise, we can too!
May the joy of these promises bless us all through salvation in Christ!
Amen.
Mark
Addendum:
Delux version:
Its very easy to read into Scripture something that is NOT there. It's human nature, just like people who live in denial. They create a comfort zone and sequester themselves within it.
For a devout Catholic to actually look at Scripture and not find what they have been told to believe pushes them outside the comfort zone.
I'm going somewhere I had no intent of going.
Throughout history the dogma of Purgatory has served the Roman Church well as a source of revenue. From the selling of indulgences that sparked the Reformation (indulgences are still granted for acts of faith such as pilgrimages, attending special Mass', and making DONATIONS) to the Selling of Mass' for the dead. (As a Funeral Director I was required to sell Mass' on behalf of the Parish Priest. It was $3.00 for a "Low Mass" and $5.00 for a "High Mass").
Everything must pass the test of Scripture. Every official doctrine of the Church confessed in the three Ecumenical Creeds (Apostles, Nicene, and Athanasian) pass the test. Doctrines such as the Perpetual Virginity of Mary, the Assumption of Mary, Limbo (even Pope B. disagreed with this one), praying to the Saints, and Purgatory DO NOT!
Luther, a Catholic Priest, always wondered if the Pope and Priests had the power and ability to alleviate the suffering in purgatory, why they charged money for it rather than free the tormented souls out of Christian Charity, free of charge.?

Well? There is a time when what we build on the Rock Foundation, Jesus Christ will be tested. The perishable works will get fried. The everlasting works is rewards. So? I don't know when this happens. If it happens right after we die. But this would be for everyone who is actually born of God who is on the Rock Foundation. Because even if their whole house gets fried, they are still saved because they are standing on the Rock. But the rewards is really what works we did on the rock foundation that was in obedience to Jesus Words.
So? Person is still the righteousness of Christ at the end of their life as when they were first born of God. The soul choices to follow after the Spirit is everlasting rewards.
I think this is the closest to purgatory I can understand.
For those not redeemed by the blood atonement, they wouldn't go to heaven, but to a place of rest or to hell or to hell fire. Unto the day of the Great White Throne Judgment.

No.... but... there was a place where the ones who did as God prescribed and were faithfull to God's Law went...in the time before Jesus The Christ came... this was called Paradise... all who were faithful to God and His law went there to wait for Christ to come and take them to Heaven... Which Christ did when he left His mortal body on The Cross.... Paradise is now out of business... those who were, or now are, of The Church do not go to Paradise or to some "Purgatory"... the souls of mortals, who's time on Earth is done, will sleep until Christ calls them up to come to Him at The Rapture of The Church.
You are correct that the sin debt of all of mankind has been paid by Christ Jesus.... but that does no mean that all are going to Heaven... only those who come to God in The Way He prescribes will enter Heaven.

there are lots of questions about 'do we go straight to heaven when we die?'... We know that Jesus says:
Luke 23:40-43
40 But the other criminal protested, “Don’t you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die? 41 We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” 43 And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
I have to take that as Truth... when we as true believers in Jesus Christ, who have accepted Him as our Savior and are born again.. that we are with Him in paradise
for those who do not believe... I think they still go to Sheol (the place of the dead) where all who died before Christ are... and those who have died since but not believed. We cannot 'pray someone out of it'.... each person must live and decide what it is that they will believe... if they chose against God's Word by refusing to seek Christ with all they are... then they will stay in Sheol until the judgement seat happens.... at which time all will be judged..
there is no purgatory.....

I have to disagree with Mark R! Traveling to Nineveh has brought up several good points. Listen, I too am a Christian, and not a Catholic, but, to point the finger and tell someone that their interpretation is flawed is just wrong! Mark R could not see purgatory in any of the scriptures TTN has quoted. Come on! I don't agree with his (TTN) translation, but, I can see that there is at least a possibility he (she) is right! It just makes me question my translation, my interpretation, my assumption! I would like to thank TTN for stirring the coals and got me studying again! Lots of new thoughts floating in my head!!!!

Look at Matthew 22:1-14 The parable about the guest at the wedding feast who was not appropriately dressed. He didn't seem to merit eternal damnation, however, he was not ready for heaven.
Matthew 18: 21-35 The parable about the servant who had his large debt forgiven and who then demanded payment from a fellow servant. "Then in anger his master handed him over to the torturers until he should pay back the whole debt" Note that he was not sent to eternal fire either, just until the debt is paid.
Matthew 12: 32 And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. The "age to come" is a reference to purgatory.
Note that the word "purgatory" does not appear in Scripture, however, the word mean to purify or to cleanse. We are cleansed and made ready, given our "wedding garment" to attend the Marriage Supper of the Lamb described in Rev. 21: "but nothing unclean will enter it, nor any (one) who does abominable things or tells lies. "
Would you appear at a formal event with mud on your clothes? No, we must remove all stain of sin before appearing before our Lord.
P.S. there is more in the Bible (both OT and NT), but you asked specifically for Christ speaking about purgatory.

That is a man made belief so the "church" could get more money from the people. Also with paying for baptisms, the infant baptism was introduced around this time to get rich. Also paying for indulgences. The Roman Catholic Church was ingenious at getting rich. A rich man would die and all of a sudden he was labeled a heretic and the "church woiuld claim all of his property for itself. Talk about greed! The belief was that you could buy someones way into heaven. What a gimmick.

Purgatory is not mentioned in the Bible. The idea behind purgatory is that even though sin has been washed away, people are still less than perfect. Purgatory is a place for souls to prepare for God. Purgatory also makes more sense if you believe that one day there will be a bodily ressurection of the saved.

No, He never spoke of Purgatory, That is a decidedly "catholic" term with no basis in fact in the scriptures.
It doesnt exist and all sin was forgiven , Past , present AND future, over two thousand years ago.
Great question and you KNEW the answer...Im impressed!

Purgatory was a concept created by evil catholic priests to extort money from the survivors of dead relatives. By promising to pray them out of hell (for a nominal fee), the corrupt priests would rake in the money.
