My boy friend bought a car from a little dealer in a bad neighborhood and they told him it had a rebuilt title but we brought our mechanic who said that it was still a decent car that was fixed very well. So we buy it. And they give us a temporary tag. But every month when my boyfriend pays they give him a new temp paper tag! I REALLY think they are doing something illegal because that cannot be normal! My brother says that maybe it has a salvaged title which means it's illegal to sell the car and that they might not even have a title for it. And my boyfriend doesn't have registration or anything and what if when he finishes paying it he can't get a tag? i just don't know anything about this and i'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on this situation. Thank you. P.S. It's a 2004 Impala SS that had 25,000 miles when we bought it. And they said it had a re-built title cuz there was a fire under the hood. But the car is awesome and runs great. I don't get it.

Call your DMV. Sounds like they don't have a title for the car and in the end, your boyfriend will have nothing but a stack of expired temporary tags.

Flooded or Stolen, also.

Did YOU give them the taxes and title fee when you bought car? They might be holding onto the cash longer and the title till you pay for the car, to save the expenses if you were not to pay off the loan.

SELLER knows laws for title transfer and insurance needs. If you have accident, then more "owners" than you can be held LIABLE and "taken to the cleaners" in court by even someone who hits you, with investigation into car history.

25,000 miles on 3+year old car means nobody drove it long distances or not driven because of the fire. 25,000 means nothing except for the possible wear on components. Not driving hurts oiled components, upon startup, as much as old oil not changed or low oil pressure with not enough oil getting to bearings.

Knowing it was rebuilt means you hope it lasts 75,000 to 100,000 before you can be satisfied it will last longer. Hoses, brakes, and seals crack even because of no usage. Rust forms on brakes and bearings.

Wiring ages with oxidation, amperage expands and contracts plastic on wiring - shorts occur, causing fires. Happens in these Ford Explorer cruise control fires, after people park in the garage and leave for several hours. POOF! flame starts - garage up in flames.

Call the attorney general's office but be prepared to lose the rights to drive the car if it's illegally registered.

You should definitely contact the local police or your local better business bureau. That is not legal. Granted there isn't a huge "crack down" on this sort of activity but, your concerns are real and they shouldn't go unchecked any further.

Yeah, that does sound like a problem. You should go to the DMV/MVA or the police.
