it is necessary for Christians to make this place up so they. can scare their children into believing. I think it is a form of emotional abuse.

Hell is like jail, with no possibility for parole.
Why is it necessary? Why is prison necessary? would it be right to let lawbreakers go without punishment?
When someone has been caught breaking the law ,they receive a sentence, jail time, fines etc.. that must be completed. That is what justice is all about, paying for your crimes. God has given us a set of laws that we must follow, but we don't, never have. When we meet the judge (God) we will be guilty before Him, because are law breakers. We have a price to pay and that is eternity in Hell, because we are bankrupt. we cannot afford to pay the fine.
But wait, Jesus paid our fine for us, all we need is to believe, repent and trust in Him and we will have no fear of the second death (Hell). But if you refuse to believe, then woe to you, hence the need for Hell, besides being a place for Satan and his demons. it will also be a very horrible place for those that continue in their unbelief.

Hell is one of those subjects that makes people uncomfortable. We hear stories of hell being a place of fire, demons, and endless torment. Throughout history many authors have written about it, Dante's Inferno for example. Western culture is very familiar with the concept. Even Hollywood has made it the subject of many movies. Whatever the context, whatever the belief, hell is definitely taught in the Bible. But even the doctrine of hell is not without its controversy. Some say it is only the grave with no consciousness. Others say it is a place of correction and punishment that is not eternal. Others say it is an endless agonizing punishment in fire. Whichever it is, hell is the total absence of the favor of God.

Christianity holds that humans are by their nature tainted by sin. Heaven including joining with God, who is perfect and pure. Its understood that you can't accept sin into Heaven. Those who are still stained with sin when they die, therefore, have to go somewhere else. This logic does not, however, require that this place be horrible and tormenting, which is why Limbo was part of Catholic theology for many centuries: a place where people went who were still sinful but who didn't deserve the torments of Hell. This included unbaptised babies and moral people who were never exposed to Christianity and, thus, never had a chance at baptism.

Hell is the only place that remains for those who do not wish to go to heaven. You see, if some one sins there is a price to pay for that sin. God chose to pay that price but requires something in return. You must ask Him to forgive you and to be the Lord of your life. If you don't then you are still covered in unrepentant sin and that sin must be paid for through punishment, hence Hell, a place of suffering and punishment for sins committed.

Hell is Satan's domain, and that is where non-believers (who decide never to accept Jesus Christ as Savior) go to spend eternity when they die! It is necessary for the unsaved to go there to suffer the consequences of not believing in Jesus and Denying our Heavenly Father as our God, the creator of ALL. We have the ability to choose where we would like to spend eternity....it's just that some don't choose wisely!! I, myself, have chosen eternity in heaven, rather than in hell!

Is Hell Real? - Why Does Anyone Go There?
Is hell real? Hell is a place of eternal separation from God, and people go there when they die because they chose to separate themselves from God while living on earth. God created us with the free will to make our own choices, and separating ourselves from God is one of the choices we are free to make. Our free will is a wonderful gift from God in that He does not force us to love Him or to follow Him. Without our free will, we would be nothing but puppets or robots, which does not please God, and certainly does nothing to better our lives.
While God desires that everyone would choose to love Him, some people will choose not to. These people will die in their sins and be separated from God forever in hell. Many would say that this is unfair, and that a loving God would never set up a system such as this; however, it is precisely God's love for us, and the fact that He is perfectly just, that tells us why hell exists, and why men and women will choose to go there. God loves us so much that He respects our freedom of choice. If we choose not to love Him, then why would He want to force us to live with Him eternally in heaven? Wouldn't living for eternity with someone we don't love be hell anyway? God wants to spare those people who don't love Him from having to live with Him and be under His rule for eternity.

The concept of hell is a simple one. It is meant to try to control the masses. It is entirely based on fear and ignorance, and on the basic idea that "if you are good, you go to heaven, but if you're bad, you go to hell for all eternity".
Thats where the control comes in. People take advantage of other people's intelligence by threatening a firey, doomsday-like situation if you don't submit to what "god wants", which is really just what the people in charge want.

From the indications that I get from the Bible, we all have a spirit. It's just as much a part of us as our skin, our hair, our organs, our opinions. The thing about our spirit is; it never dies, it doesn't 'go away', it's always a part of us. This is why God won't simply make Satan vanish. Satan is a spirit, an ex-angel. Now referred to as a demon, or 'the devil'.
God made spirits to live eternally. And Hell is a place where nowhere else is, where God can sever contact with. He doesn't have to keep it in His presence.
Hell was made for Satan and his angels. It wasn't even made for humans, but since the fall of Adam, it will most certainly contain them, and has been containing them for a long time now.
Satan decided to rebel against God. And so he is supposed to be there. And those humans who also rebel against God, well, they will get their wish, they won't have God around, just like they wanted. He doesn't compromise, and so will not change for them, they have to change for Him. Basically, God said that, If you don't accept my Son, I will not accept you as sons.
And so many people will end up in Hell. They won't accept God's Son, and His Son said:
"For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son." (John 3:17-18)
Those who believe Jesus, will escape the wrath of God, which ends up in the place we call 'Hell'.
The following excerpt I put here for you, in case you want to read it. If you don't, then please ignore it. I think that it is the finest writing on what Hell is that I've seen.
ONLY READ IT IF YOU WANT TO, OKAY?

Sheol
(Strong's 7585)
The 65 occurances of this word are distributed throughout every period of biblical Hebrew.
First, the word means a state of death: "For in death there is no rememberance of thee: in the grave, who shall give thee thanks?" (Psalm 6:5; cf. 18:5). It is the final resting place of all men: "They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave (Job 21:13). Hanna confessed that it was the omnipotent God who brings men to sheol (death) or kills them (1Samuel 2:6). "Sheol" is parallel to Hebrew words for "pit" or "hell" (Job 26:6). "corruption" or "decay" (Psalm 16:10), and "destruction" (Proverbs 15:11).
Second, "Sheol" is used of a place of conscious existence after death. In the first biblical appearance of the word Jacob said that he would "go down into the grave unto my son mourning" (Genesis 37:35). All men go to "Sheol" --- a place and state of consciousness after death (Psalm 16:10). The wicked recieve punishment there (Numbers 16:30); Deuteronomy 32:22; Psalm 9:17). They are put to shame and silenced in "Sheol" (Psalm 31:17). Jesus alluded to Isaiah's use of sheol (14:13-15) in pronouncing judgement on Capernaum (Matthew 11:23), translating:Sheol" as "Hades" or "Hell," meaning the place of conscious existence and judgement. It is an undesirable place for the wicked (Job 24:19) and a refuge for the righteous (Job 14:13). Thus "Sheol" is also a place of reward for the righteous (Hosea 13:14; cf. 1 Corinthians 15:55). Jesus' teaching in Luke 16:19-31 seems to reflect accurately the Old Testament concept of Sheol, it is a place of conscious existence after death, one side of which is occupied by the suffering. unrighteous dead separated by a great chasm from the other side peopled by the righteous dead enjoying their reward.
