The Kol Nidre prayer is a prayer wherein we cancel all vows we have made during the year. In Jewish Law, a vow taken must be adhered to unless negated by the high priest or the court. This is a chance for everyone to negate their vows, no questions asked. On a historical note, those forced to convert to Christianity during the Middle Ages would negate that vow during this prayer (in Jewish law, a Jew cannot convert out of the religion, so the adopting of Christianity was a vow).
