Long-term If all your dog ate was cat food, or vice-versa, in the long run you'd have some nutritional deficiencies which could be harmful.

Short term- if either one eats enough of each other's food, they'll get the runs- my dog must be blocked from entering the room where I feed my cats because she once ate several bowls worth of cat food and then had runny craps everywhere. (nice)

Occasionally, one of my cats will eat a piece of the dry dog food- kind of like a biscuit for him, I guess.

Neither--nobody's going to die if they eat each others food. This takes place quite often at my sons house. They have 2 dogs and 1 kitty. They "sample" each others food all the time, and it's been going on for about 6 or 7 years, and no creature has died (or even gotten sick) because of it.

It is just not the best thing to constantly feed a cat dog food (rather than cat food) because it doesn't have the proper nutrients in it for a cat. It doesn't matter if a dog eats cat food--a dog will eat almost anything, especially people food and cat food, if they can get to it. I guess the cat food must be tastier than dog food, but I'm not going to do a "taste-test" myself. However, whoever told you this is full of it.

Wow, does anybody really know this answer? LOL Dogs can eat cat food with no ill effects; however, they do best on dog food. Cats, on the other hand, CAN suffer from a variety of health problems if they eat dog food on a regular basis (an occasional nibble is okay). If fed a steady diet of dog food over a long period of time, cats can go blind; they can also develop feline dilated cardiomyopathy, which is a serious heart condition. Cats require more taurine (um, protein? LOL) than dogs do, so cat food is higher in taurine than dog food is. Taurine is an amino acid which is added to all cat foods; and taurine is the most important reason why cats should not eat dog food. Cats do need a higher level of protein; but protein is not the reason cats should not eat dog food!! In addition to taurine and protein, cats also require a different form of vitamin A than dogs do; while dogs can use beta carotene as a source of vitamin A, cats cannot process it. Finally, cats cannot manufacture arachidonic acid (a fatty acid) and this must also be supplemented in their diet; arachidonic acid is not a necessary part of a dog's diet.

Yes and no. Eating some here and there would not kill a cat. Even having some daily would probably only cause a weight problem.

But if that's the only thing a cat was eating, it would eventually die or become seriously ill because it wouldn't be getting the nutrients it requires, taurine for one.

Don't know about dogs eating cat food - but I suspect they'd be fine.

They will not die. But catfood makes dogs fat, it has more stuff in it so don't let your dog eat it. I have 4 cats and a chihuahua. I have dry cat food on the floor, the dog eats a little of it its hard to avoid. Big no-no for wet cat food, it just too much! My cats also eat a little dog dry food. The dog doesn't. It would be better if they not, but they won't die.

No but they could get sick. Dogs and cats have very different dietary needs. Dogs like cat food. Cats need meat. Dogs need meat and vegetables.
Just keep their food separate. I have 2 cats and a dog and I haven't had a problem. I grew up with having a cat and a dog. We didn't have a problem with it. We stayed around and didn't leave food out. The pets were on a feeding schedule. It worked out well.

Noooo they wouldn't die, they just wouldn't be particularly healthy in the long term.

Dogs and cats have different dietary requirements, so it is important to feed them the food meant for them. Dogs in particularly are very likely to get fat on cat food, and this of course leads to many secondary problems.

The occasional bite won't do either species any harm, but it's not something to make a habit of!

You are right - dogs should not eat cat food and cats should not eat dog food. It will make the dog sick (too much protein) and could affect liver/kidney of the dog. But that is over time. Do not let the dog get into any of the cat food in the future.

Definitely not.
I agree with first responder, cats may lack some nutrients needed if fed dog food on constant basis.
I have always had a menagerie of cats and dogs. They taste each others always.
Food is food, all edible,.... NOT poison.
My dogs relish the cats' food, seems cat food is more tastier.

Every case would be different....just like if a dog eats chocolate. Some would be OK, some would not do so well. I have 2 cats and one dog and my dog has always prefered the cat food. Thats what she likes, so thats what I give her, and she is just fine.
