i think its the french form for Lazarus. it was once spelled with only one r in it so it is possibly a french/Jewish name but it was actually a boys first name. STRAOTANKER! Were those comments really necessary?

Jews took the same surnames of other people in their nationality. There could be some French Jews with the name Lazarre as French Catholics.
Actually from the Orthodox and Conservative perspective, a person is a Jew if he has a Jewish mother, not necessarily a Jewish father. They state they get the nation from the mother and the tribe from the father. If a Jew does not have a Jewish father, he belongs to the tribe of the nearest male relative on the mother's side of the family.
So a person could be O' Shannahan and still be a Jew.

Ancestry.com gives England as the place of origin for Lazarre, and London, England, as the port of departure. Apparently, a single person with the last name of Lazarre immigrated in 1877. Feel free to either accept or reject this information as it fits what you already know about your family.
