3 mo. old chi, vaccinated, 1.5 lbs. started with a cough like something stuck in throat. Suspected kennel cough, Vet couldn't confirm, cough seemed to get better. She had intermittent yellowish loose bowel movements at same time, Vet changed diet with added cooked rice, only to make it worse. Now puppy is drooling so bad when it sleeps, it looks like it's had a bath. Upper stomach under ribs growls every morning like someone starving, yet she doesn't even want to eat now. Vet gave her Diarsanyl yesterday - hasn't helped yet, and now when she does cough it sounds more wet; I suspect from all the drooling. I know everyone's going to say to get new Vet but there is no better Vet in area...believe me, I know. Any Vet's out there with any suggestions? This puppy needs HELP.

There aren't any vets on Yahoo Answers.

Sorry for what you're going through, but you really need to continue working with vets to find out the problem. Illnesses can be complicated, vets might not always find the problem straight away, but there's still no better people to investigate illnesses in animals. I would stay away from the internet on your search for answers I'm afraid - it's very hard to tell the truth from the bullsh*t and all that usually happens is you end up getting paranoid and scaring yourself.

We have 2 vets that we use for our dogs. This is mainly because not every vet knows everything. One of our local vets is mostly a cow vet but does treat other animals. We have had better luck with another 20 mi. away. But he is also a cow vet. In a farming community it's difficult at best to find a small animal vet. We have also traveled 50 mi. or so to OKC to other vets for various reasons. I personally would be looking at heartworms or something similar. Many times these cause coughing. I do have a Chi. that does basically the same thing every times he drinks, but he doesn't have the loose bowel problems. This could also be related to the food you buy! We used to believe that Puppy Chow was the best but this breed sometimes develops allergies to certain foods! We have found Beneful to be a better food for our pups! Try a diet switch and see if this helps. We went through about 4-5 different ones before finding this one. If you have a small Chi 1-2lb. you may need a higher fat content.

Hmm... the only other thing I could think of is maybe she actually has something lodged in her throat? Or possibly swallowed something she shouldn't have and it's blocking her intestinal tract?

I know you say that is the best Vet in town, but perhaps just a second opinion from another Vet? If they cannot figure out what it wrong, it could be useful to try a second opinion.

I would take it to another vet even if I had to take it to another town or county. Tiny chihuahuas cannot go long periods without eating. They will die from hypoglycemia. Either she has a blocked esophagus or a blocked intestine. Either way, it will not get better without seeing a vet and finding and fixinf what the problem is.

30+ yr with chihuahuas.

Where did u get the puppy from? If you purchased from a breeder you should have received a health certificate and a health guarantee that was good for at least 48 hours....
