LOL! If I could figure that out, I'd probably be able to understand why two people, both with shopping carts, need to block the aisle while they stand there catching up. Maybe I'd be able to figure out why, when following a crowd, people have to just stop dead in front of me to figure out where they're going and why they can't move to the right and figure it out without blocking everybody behind them. Or why on the people movers at airports, people insist on walking real fast passing those with luggage who are taking their time; why don't the people in a hurry walk outside the people movers....

People stop and talk to those going the other direction. If they are passing in a wide hallway, they can pretend they do not see each other and just keep going their own direction.
Since doorways tend to force them closer, it is more likely that two people passing will be unable to ignore the other person and thus, they have to stop and talk. The idea that one or the other should "retreat" the direction they came from so they do not cause a problem for others goes contrary to our "move ahead" attitudes so neither will do so. Thus they stand in the doorway and talk, causing a bottle neck for everyone else.
Even worse are the people who inflict their cell phone conversations on us by talking loudly as if the phone is from the 1920s and you have to yell to make yourself heard.

They meet coming and going, therefore talk in doorways. They have no consideration for others passing by as they are so engrossed in their own conversations. Perhaps it is a friend they haven't seen in years. Think about it. Haven't you done it? I know I have. We don't do it on purpose but it's not polite to block doorways or aisles.

Because they are clueless. They think that what they are talking about is the only thing that matters in this world. They are totally unaware of the people around them, except for the person that they are talking to.

For the same reason people are in line for a few minutes at a restaurant, and still can't decide what they want when it's their turn to order.

The same reason they stop at the tops and bottoms of escalators! I've run into people before because "Hello!" the stairs don't stop.

People are often so caught up in their own conversations that they simply tune out everyone around them. A firm...but friendly..."excuse me"....is usually enough to get them out of the way.
best wishes
