I think they take 'cat naps' so they are a little bit alert. Maybe it's a cat's life and not a dog's life huh?

The main reasons domestic cats sleep so much is because of the eating patterns of the wild cats they evolved from. It is an instinct that is bred within them. This is because cats are crepuscular, not nocturnal. Crepuscular means that they are most active at dawn and dusk, which is when their "prey" is most active. Throughout the rest of the day, the cat conserves his energy for the hunt by sleeping, eating and relaxing throughout the day, until it is time to hunt.

most cats will sleep up to 18 hours a day.

but they don't sleep like we do, they take cat naps. these are just really light sleep where they can still hear and feel things going on around them. However, since they don't have timeschdules and meals to cook, they can relax to the fullest and enjoy a nice lounge most of the day.

You are correct. Even tho cats 'nap' there ears are always twitching and if someone came near them their head goes up to see if its friend or foe. but cats like to sleep a lot during the day and play at nite, mine now sleeps part of the nite cause we won't play with him.

Cats are "programmed" this way from their cousins in the wild--the big cats. Cats sleep most of the day because they are "programmed" to be nocturnal--a night-roaming/hunting creature.
