After the time period you will get a message stating that this is not 'genuine' ms screen.
It will boot up to a white screen, no wallpaper, screensaver no nothing.
You will be able to browse the computer via IE.
You can access your data and programs. Just a major pain.

I don't get it... The key is usually stuck to the machine. How did your mom throw it away? Is this a new machine? Did you have to reinstall the OS? Are you upgrading from XP to Vista? How did you get to needing the key again? Who is the manufacturer of the computer? May be able to help you if I learn the manufacturer. Otherwise, you are going to have to buy a new key to stay legal and in operation. If it gets to that might as well upgrade to Windows 7.

It will stop working you can't Browse your Computer... You than have to move you Document from C: or Installed drive to safe place by using another computer... you can try format the Installed drive and re Install it in there and RE Run the New XP or Vista... another 30 days you will have to do the same.. to run...
But better if you have Active Key... than install it 30 days later...

If you don't complete the product activation process after 30 days, Windows XP will still boot, but you'll be unable to launch Windows until you call the Microsoft Clearinghouse and enter the code.

Geez, I don't know. But don't install both of them. I'd stick with XP. These are Operating Systems. I don't think a computer can operate without an operating system. We used to use just DOS, and that was no fun. I'm not a geek and I don't know what I'm talking about, so this is just a thought.

meaning it will be rendered usless after the expiration date.
Just call MS and get a new serial key, tell them you re formatted your computer and need a new one. They will be more than happy to provide that for you over the phone and while you test it. But don't be like most noobs and answer the question " How many computers will you be using " with 2 or more... Just say 1.

if you dont then after 30days you will not be able to access your desktop, you not be able to click on items like internet explorer......the thing i figured out was that ......If you leave the computer on and dont use any type of screen saving, options, just leave the computer ALWAYS ON. if you do this even after 30 days have pass the desktop will be still on you can still use as long as you like.....
CON;s : the mintue you turn that computer off or the screen saver comes on,you will not be able to use it it will force you to activate it......

They will partially stop working after a short time, and just give you nag screens. You should be able to boot, but not do much work, it will give you contact information to call MS and clear up the problem.
