I am a SAHM(kids 9,3 yrs), and there are times during the day when I let the phone ring. Like, about 30-40 mins when I've just got my 3 yr old home from preschool, or just picked up my 9 yr old from school. Or, when we are doing some activity together. Then, non-kid related activities like if I am researching something on the web, planning a vacation online.
So, in short there are some slots in the day when I don't take phone calls. Sometimes, I can say 'will call u back', and sometimes I just don't pick it up. Friends think I am taking this SAHM-but-I-too-am-busy-at-times thing too far.
So, if you are a SAHM, do you have times when you check caller-id and decide not to pick up. Or sometimes don't even check caller-id?
My friends know they can call my cell-ph for an emergency, or leave a message. These are old friends, and we laugh about it, but I'd like to hear from other SAHMs?

We choose to do this as a family, not just me as a SAHM. Kids come first - someone with an emergency will always call back. We only have a landline. We turn off the phone completely during supper - and sometimes for the evening...
And I don't pick and choose based on caller id. I just don't run to the phone if I'm doing something important.
Being on the net doesn't count as important!

When I was staying at home there were LOTS of times that I did this! If I didn't want to be interrupted from my daughter's time then the phone would ring. If it was important they would leave a message. If no message was left then it wouldn't have been worth me picking up anyway.
Heck, I think I do it more now that I'm a working Mom. My time is too precious with my daughter to pick up the phone!
We don't have caller ID or any of the phone features either, very basic phone line as we use our mobiles for most of our calls.

I have been both a stay at home mom and a working mom. There are still times when I don't answer the phone. In my opinion that's what caller id and answering machines are for. I rarely pick up the phone if we are eating dinner. And sometimes if we are having family time, etc. I feel like if anyone really needs to talk to me they can leave a message and I will call them back when I can.

I don't think this is something exclusive to SAHM. Anyone has the right not to answer the telephone at anytime. Sheez, it's their phone! And sometimes your family takes priority, or whatever you're doing. That's why we have caller ID and answering machines. Heck, a lot of people always screen their calls. You never know when that really chatty friend is going to want to talk your ear off for an hour and then you can't get off the phone, can't get anything done.

there are many tI'me throughout the day that i do not answer the phone. If im busy with my kids or doing something special with them, i don't answer. I also don't answer the phone during dinner time. That's our family tI'me and it will not be interrupted. During that first nursing session with my son in the mornings, before my daughter is awake, i wont answer the phone the same with the story time at bedtime with my daughter. And then there is times that i just cant put down what im doing to answer the phone. My friends and family know that if they leave a message that i will call them back and if its an emergency to say so when the machine picks up because i can hear it.

absolutely!! There are several time a day that I do not answer the phone or turn the ringer off and the answering machine volume down. Some people don't realize that being a SAHM is hard work and you need some down time too...like when the children are napping. I wouldn't feel bad about your friends giving you a hard time. These are your children and you should not feel pressured to talk to them when, at the time, you are spending time with your children.

I do pick up the phone whenever possible. I like hearing from family and friends and being a SAHM limits my adult contact and conversation. I look forward to people returning my calls or being able to take a few minutes out of my busy day with 2 toddlers and talk on the phone!

My phone is always set so that I can hear anyone leaving a message and pick-up if I choose to. I choose to do this so I don't accidently get on the phone with people I really don't care to talk to or who I might want to talk with later but not now because I am busy.
It's my phone, not theirs. I have the right to decide when I want to be on it and not be at the beck and call of whoever chooses to dial me up.
Anybody I would likely want to talk to knows I screen my calls this way and no one has complained, at least not to me.
They want to be in charge of their lives too, just as I am in this small area.

I am a SAHM and if I see a number from somebody I don't want to talk to I don't answer. Like my MIL for instance LOL. I usually only answer it if it's my son's school, my older children or my husband. Otherwise I don't. I live in the desert and my ear gets all sweaty and the phone gets all wet and sweaty and it's just gross! I don't WANT to talk on the phone so I don't.

Yes, and I have always done this. I don't pick up the phone if it is not convenient.... I don't think I have an obligation to be available to other people 24 hours a day.
