I would say, you got out with your sanity, and I respect you for that.

I begged my mum to divorce my dad since I was 4 years old - he was violent and emotionally abusive. She didn't until I was 14 and had a nervous breakdown and she had turned into an alcoholic.
If I was to go back I'd tell him to leave the minute my youngest sister was born - then maybe we could have grown up with some sort of a normal life and a lot less of the problems we have now.
Not all divorce is a bad thing by any means.

I grew up in a better world when they didn't call people names like that.
"children of divorce"...."non-custodial parent"
None of what is or was between my parents and I is related to the word marriage or divorce.

Keep in touch, no matter how difficult your ex is. Form a relationship with the kids apart from your relationship with their other parent.

"Why didn't you try harder....to see me, call me, be a part of my everyday life. Because if you and mom would have still been together, you would have had to go to my games, school, teacher conferences, & be a part of my ups and downs. I needed advice. I needed guidance."
