To the person who asked why I bought a kitten from a pet store?? Well, dear, before you accuse me from support pet mills, she was found in a box in front of the pet store and the little country pet store took her and in asked a HUGE fee of $25 for her so I took her in and gave her a home. So before you point fingers, get your facts straight.

I was being sarcastic about the HUGE 25 dollar fee...............

Well for starters, you won't find anything useful in a pet store for flea treatment - not their fault, they're not allowed to sell the proper drugs, they can only sell random insecticides that unfortunately don't really work (and are often harmful).

You need to go to a vets for some proper products. How old is the kitten? From 8 weeks they can have Frontline spot-on - under this they need the spray form, which is safe for use on kittens from 2 days of age. You can also get a housespray from a vets - and you will need one. You may have found 5 fleas on the cat, but only 5% of the flea population live on the animal, so you need to treat the environment.

EDIT: telluwhat is a little confused - the 'oil from the vets' lasts 4-6 WEEKS, and Frontline isn't toxic to be ingested. Flea shampoos a good example of a worthless treatment - note the 'most of the fleas were gone' - well that's no good!

Advantage or Frontline is the usual recommendation to treat the cats. There are a number of products that can be used to treat the house, depending on what kind of surfaces you have and how nasty the infestation is; a good place to start is an area spray with an IGR (insect growth regulator). Your vet should be able to help more; *some* pet store people can give good suggestions as well.

Sorry if you're getting grief about buying the kitten, but a lot of pet stores do sell kittens from less than reputable 'breeders' which take away homes from shelter kittens. A lot of folks here work with shelters and rescue and they're kinda touchy about that.

PS - $25 is 'huge'? Please tell me you were being sarcastic...taking care of the cat, especially the spay, is going to cost a lot more than that. I do hope they included at least a deworming for that, though.

Hi, I use Fronline it's fantastic stuff. It's one of the best that's why it's recommended by vets. My kitten has not had any fleas at all since I've been using this.3 months supply is about £22 and worth every penny. Make sure you apply it to the skin and not the hair.Frontline spreads all over the cats skin so you don't have to wait for the fleas to bite the cat, they die soon after coming into contact with the cats skin. There will be fleas all over your home too.I used Bob Martins flea bombs a couple of months ago.I found these great.I used one for each room, make sure to seal the door up and use one for each room. All you have to do is light it then run out of the room and then leave it for 2 hours. They cost about £4.99 each . I have had no fleas since using both of these products together.Good luck

I wouldn't flea bomb. Buy some Frontline from the pet store or vet and apply it to the kitten; however, make sure it is old enough so ask your vet.
You need to vaccum your house really well and either buy some flea spray that is non-toxic to your cat or call a pesticude company like COOKS to come spray. I'm not a fan of flea bombs.

ask what remedy used to be used on the grounds that a few can't be overlapped with out first consulting a vet if it used to be easily a flea shampoo they are able to decide on up extra fleas as an alternative swiftly fleas eggs can keep dormant for many years in furnishings and carpets regardless of using frontline i probably discover a million or two fleas on my cat and he or she is dealt with like clockwork

frontline, and perhaps board your kitten at the vet while you clean your home (vaccum and wash). We were boarding our (indoor) kitten while we were away for two days, and the vet called us to tell us she had fleas. We were shocked, but since she most likely came from the shelter with fleas(we had only had her a couple weeks at the time) we boarded her for one more day (while she was on frontline) and took that time to vaccum, wash all bedding and anything else that might have flea eggs on it. Once our little kitten came home, we haven't seen a flea again!

ok depending how much you want to spend frontline or advantage work well my personal fav is capstar which you can only get at the vet but its a pill that they ingest and kills all the fleas on their body within 30 mins
also if she has fleas she prolly has worms b/c when they ingest fleas when they clean themselves they turn into worms inside
i wood take her to a vet anyways cuz she needs her 4n1 shots and they can check for that stuff there
good luck

well the first thing you want to do is flea bomb your house (with out the kitty inside) because there are probably eggs now. I use Advantage on my animals- i have 2 cats one has long hair and it seems to work just fine.

I had a cat that I found outside. most of his fleas were gone thru flea shampooing.

however, the remainder used the oil that you get from the vet. it is a little plasic capsule, you pop the top of it and dab it onto the back of their necks.

it is put here so he cannot lick it or rub it with his paws. this is very toxic for the cat to injest. this oil will absorb into the skin and then the bloodstream. it lasts 6 months and will probably be all you need.

Advantage is good but probably not on a young kitten. Call your vet office and ask.
