I also have an overweight cat, she is at 26 pounds. I've been told by several vets to use diet food and make her exercise. She really isn't into exercise but she has been on diet food for several years. Right now she is on Hill's Science Diet R/D. Just make sure you restrict the amount of food your cats eat and try a diet or light food.

HI
The answer is simple. Stop feeding them kitty crack (dry food) and start feeding them what they really need. You will be surprised at ther difference

Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard, dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. The problems with it are that they are loaded with carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. Most of the moisture a cat needs is gotten
out of the food and 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Also, most use horrible ingredients and don't use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.
You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. In a nutshell, most cats are fat because they've been fed too much (free-feeding or indulging them) and because they're fed dry food which is NOT appropriate food for them due to the grain/carb/sugar content. Cats are obligate carnivores who need to eat a high meat-based protein diet, which is also high in fats and low in carbs.

Many vets, who are sadly ignorant on the topic of proper cat nutrition, will recommend prescription diet foods (usually dry). Cats are expected to lose weight on a starvation diet of 1/4 or 1/3 cup of food per day. Everyone is miserable in these situations.

The solution is to switch the fat cat (and any others in the household as well) to a good quality canned food. Because these foods are species appropriate, the cat will lose weight at a safe, slow pace (no more than 1 pound per month). Switching foods needs to occur slowly, and if you're trying to get a kibble junkie to eat canned food, that will happen naturally.

That's it. Easy as pie. Not only will fat cats lose weight, but it and any others in the home will reap many benefits of eating a speciies appropriate diet.

It's a question of finding the right balance of food and exercise, but it's more complicated than that.

Quality of food is as important as quantity. What type of food are you currently feeding? How much? Any cat that is prone to overweight will certainly get fat on supermarket brands like Whiskas, Felix, Go-Cat, Meow Mix and Fancy Feast. Don't expect your cat to get slim on any of these, even if you're feeding a small amount! You need to get a high quality food and feed the correct daily amount for the weight you WANT your cats to be, not the weight they are - and feed this diet to the exclusion of all other foods of course. How much your cat weighs depends on how big they are - best to get a vet to give you an idea of ideal weight. Average cat weight is 7.7-8.8 pounds.

Feel free to email me with the brand and amount of food you're feeding your cats - I run weight clinics for animals, this is what I do day in day out, so happy to help. Get your cat exercising as well by using toys - most can't resist a laser pen - but in this day and age, food is the first factor to address.

EDIT: brite-starry-nite's cat has been on R/D for several YEARS? This is the brand I use - even the fattest cat shouldn't need to be on it for more than a year to get to target weight! When this happens you know you're doing something wrong i.e feeding way too much of the diet, or too extra food on top of it. Really wish she accepted email so I could help!!

You should try to get them to exercise more. Find something that interests them (a string, aluminum foil ball, bells etc..) and spend time keeping them active for a bit of time a day (say 15-20 minutes?)

You should also switch to feeding them on a schedule instead of just giving them free-access to food. A warning though, do not dramtically decrease the amount of food you are giving your cats without talking to your vet first because it could cause serious liver damage to your cats.

same as with a person. Stop feeding so much, and institute play time (excercise). Do it slowly though. Too fast a weight lose is very bad for cats. You can also switch to a diet cat food.

Get diet cat food. Reduce the amount of food you give. But don't starve them by taking away food completely. Buy things they can climb on for excercise. Hope this helps. ^^
