Not ALL cheese has that 'red covering' ... and it's a 'wax' with a bit of 'paper' inside it to 'protect' the cheese from drying ... and while it's not 'toxic' it is not 'palatable' and you should 'remove it' before 'serving' the cheese inside.
There is a 'covering' that looks like 'dried bluish mold' with white dust on it when you buy 'brie' cheese ... that is PART OF THE CHEESE and is meant to be 'eaten' with the 'creamy inside' ... so you should probably buy your cheese from a good 'cheese vendor' and ASK about any 'wrapping or covering' since some are 'meant to be eaten' as part of the cheese, and others are merely 'coverings' to help keep the cheese from 'drying out.'

No food is ever enclosed in toxic material (unless, of course, it comes from China) because if that were the case, some of the toxic material would seep into the food. Old cans used to be soldered with lead, leading to a number of neurological ailments until it was discovered that lead is toxic. The red covering is wax, which is not toxic and it is also generally edible. But as someone here said, it is not palatable (not tasty).

no, it's made of wax and cheesecloth. it doesn't taste good and most people won't eat it but if you have eaten some don't worry it will pass without any problems. they have to make it non-toxic because it encases the cheese.

Are you referring to gouda cheese? No, not toxic but don't eat it - your stomach might not like it.

Uh, no. It is wax. I'm not sure why you would consider eating it, but to each his own.
