I am going at the begininng of October. Starting in Sydney and then roaming around for about 2 weeks. Shoestring budget - but are there any "must do's/must see's" that I cant miss? Even outside of Australia? I may travel north.....

There is a great little free publication in pocket booklet form called ‘Oz On A Budget’. You will be able to pick this up at most information / tourist centres. Has heaps of coupons inside and tips on ‘a shoestring budget’.
Their website is http://www.aussiebackpacker.com.au Tells you how to find the best budget accommodation etc in Australia as well as things to do.
Note – the book available to buy on their website is not the free one, you can get that when here.

Top picks for me would be the theme parks on the Gold Coast, not far from Brisbane.
Wet 'n Wild, Seaworld, Dreamworld, Movie World. (usually if you buy the theme park tickets with your airfare they are cheaper, 4 for 3 deal.
They are all listed here - http://www.theme-parks.com.au

This website not only lists the above but also ALL the parks and attractions by state.

Just out of Brisbane - Steve Irwins Family Zoo http://www.australiazoo.com.au is a must see.

For the cheapest way to see the Great Barrier Reef out from Cairns, North Queensland is a trip out on the reef to Green Island with http://www.greatadventures.com.au/Default.aspx?tabid=25 or http://www.greenisland.com.au

The Museum of Natural History in Sydney is great. Also, get a car and a map, and visit some of the National Parks in and around Sydney - you'll be glad you did. Ku-rin-gai Chase National Park, as well as Koala Park, are probably the ideal spots for visitors. Ever pet a Koala?

For fun, visit the pubs on Friday or Saturday night at The Rocks (the neighbourhood just under the Sydney Harbour Bridge on the city side) - live music and a great atmosphere. If you don't have kids with you, I'd also suggest visiting Darlinghurst Road in Kings Cross - its the local red light district, but still pretty safe. And it's open VERY late - some pubs used to close at 7am!

Later, try heading north to Surfer's Paradise (near Brisbane) - even at this time of year, it's pretty warm.

Personally, I'd skip Uluru (aka Ayres Rock), since there's nothing to do out there but look at the rock. Facinating, but not worth the money to get there.

On a shoestring budget check backpackers hostels in Sydney to see if you can join a group heading north up the coast to Queensland. In two weeks, however, you will see a lot of road and not much else if you are driving. Australia is very big place. Check out cheap air fares online from Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Blue. There are often some surprisingly good bargains available. After Sydney, try to get to Cairns or Uluru or both if you can afford it.

If you indeed travel north, you can consider the Great Barrier Reef of Queensland. This is a World Heritage site comprises of over 3000 reefs and coral cays, hundreds of picturesque tropical islands ad world’s most beautiful beaches.

You can enjoy exciting outdoor activities and underwater activities such as scuba diving, snorkelling, white water rafting, trekking, hill climbing, mountain biking, hot air ballooning, seeing coral and marine life in glass-bottom boats or semi-submersibles.
