A year and a half ago there were quite a few differences and most folks were using Firefox instead of IE7 because of the bugs with the new IE software and some inherent security issues.
I currently use both and using multiple browsers is common and recommended by many techies I've read.
Most of what I've seen on the "tech" sites that I belong to say that they are so close these days that there really isn't much difference in functionality or security.
In fact the last tech report that I read regarding them stated that Firefox was falling behind IE7 in respect to security.
So it's a matter of opinions that you listen to, and your personal preferences that will most likely persuade you to use one over the other.
As I said, I use them both and I find the only "major" difference is the graphical user interface (GUI) and not much else.
I also have Opera and Netscape installed and use them occasionally also.
Hope this helps.

Because some people (believe it or not) don't have a Windows based OS. Linux/Unix and Apple users can't run IE let alone IE7, whereas Firefox runs on multiple platforms and runs exactly the same on all of them.

That is your opinion. IE is still a massive security risk, it's also a massive program almost six times the size of Firefox. If you think it's faster than Firefox, good luck to you. Millions of people use Firefox because they think its better and I'm one of them.
Fortune 500 members are not necessarily smart people, some just had rich parents, but most would have shares in Microsoft. Figure it out for yourself. If you owned shares in Pepsi, would you drink coke?

Are you heavy into MS stock? Firefox is WAY better than IE. The main reason I like Firefox is that it follows the standards with regard to Internet programming. I'm always having to fight with IE browser results of my programming where Firefox displays what I want it to the first time. So many work-arounds to make things work in Internet Explorer. UGH!

FireFox is less forgiving when decoding programming languages than IE is. So if you're a web programmer FireFox is more likely to let you know you coded something wrong than IE is.
Plus FireFox has a butload of sick mods!

There is nothing fast about IE7 and you are probably the only one who thinks it's better than Firefox.
IE7 as "better" and "faster" than Firefox is only so in your unqualified opinion.
