Formula 1 is not going any where...Formula 1 is about youth, Montoya and Villenueve are to old, Villenueve has won the world championship before, I saw him many times when I lived in Europe, he was a brat, but I liked him, he must to have changed hair colors a zillion times.. He won indy as well, I don't think he is a good as his father Giles was. but he is a great driver, he could win in Nascar before Juan possibly. Indy Cars thats another topic, drivers like driving with fans in the stands, IRL only has good turn out at a couple races, Dan Wheldon says he wants to drive races, IRL does maybe 14 a yr, he loves the fact that Nascar has 36 races..Nascar is all about $$$$ now, these top drivers bring huge sponsors over, its on TV every sat or sunday, and they race in america....Its sad theres not enough formula 1 fans in america, I use to go to all the F1 races in Long Beach I loved it.. As far as Hornish and Franchitti, they have both won Indy and both won IRL championship, what else is left for them to do....Come to Nascar.. My only complaint is that all these guys coming over are keeping some really good Busch drivers in the Busch circuit longer, when they deserve a Cup ride...But again its all about big names and $$$$.. Formula 1 is here to stay CART and IRL, well they better merge back, while theres still a few fans in the stands..

Why are you comparing formula 1 and indy as if they are the same thing? IRL is closer to NASCAR than F1 ie. mainly ovals.
Indy is without doubt on the way out. They need to bring it back to one championship as soon as possible. If they dont then they are doomed becuase the american market is not big enough for two major open wheel series and champ car cannot compete with F1.
Juan Montoya is the ONLY f1 driver that has defected from F1 and he only did it because he had no choice. He was out of a drive with McLaren and the only options left to him were with crap teams. Villeneuve is an ex F1 driver who has been fired twice in the last 2 years and had no drive for this year. He even said he wanted to stay in F1 but he had no choice but to leave it. They didnt want him. Formula one is expanding the calender all around the world. Next year there will be new races in Indonesia, Singapore and a second race in Spain. India is also desperately trying to get a GP for 2009.
The only F1 drivers who will ever go to NASCAR are the ones who arent wanted in F1 anymore. Whether you agree or not, most F1 drivers would look at NASCAR as a step down. Its not a form of racing that is higly thought of by F1 drivers. They generally dont see a challenge in driving ovals and its not well respected in Europe.
On the other hand the FIA(F1 governing body) is doing an amazing job of pissing off the current F1 fans by introducing ridiclous regulations to cut costs which have resulted in Higher costs and cars that have aerodynamics that make overtaking close to impossible. I know a lot of people who used to love F1 but now hate it because the FIA have messed with the regulations so much. So if they dont cop on and get it back to the way it was 10 years ago i can see a decline eventually but thats a long long way off and a lot will happen before that ever happens.
Im sure you will pick a best answer that says "yes F1 and Indy are dead!!" written by someone who knows nothing about wither though.
By the Beth F1 fans do not want parity. F1 has never had parity and it should remain that way. The best drivers end up with the best teams anyway eventually. Their recent attemps to bring a kind of parity have put the teams at the back further away from points than ever. F1 fans support teams more than a particular driver. If you introduce regulations that takes away the design innovations which is one of the most important things to F1 fans, even more so than the racing.

Well IRL and champ series is sinking year after year so to me that will continue, actually Champ series is out of the radar and with Horninsh Jr and Dario heading to Nascar I dont know what will happen to IRL...I personally love IRL but confess that I am worried about the future..
As for F1 goes that is something diferent F1 is much but much by far a known-worldwide racing series that is in trouble right now but if Maclaren gets a penalty then nothing will happen but if judge let Ron Dennis free with no penalty then F1 will be in a deep hole.....But please dont never put F1 X Nascar bcuz is not even fair to fair....Nascar is only famous and seen hee in the U.S

Lots of people thought Tony George was a moron when he took the Indy 500 (which was sanctioned by USAC, not CART) and formed the IRL. But now the CART people are the morons for hanging on to that series. I agree that they should have merged two years ago, and I agree that when it happens, open-wheel racing will soon return to its former prominence. Fans want to see skilled racing by skilled drivers, and that's not what they're getting in NASCAR right now.

indy and champ car have been on a ventilator for years
F1 never going to happen. Villeneuve and montoya couldnt get a decent ride in F1 thats why they came to nascar. If ferrari or mclaren were to offer these guys a ride they would take it

i equate the fall of American open wheel and the rise of nascar , in the same context as the fall of boxing and the rise of ufc (mma fighting in general) it isn't so much about one upping their game as it is about the big one killing itself and the other being ready to fill the vacuum left behind, in both boxing and open wheel they are killing them self and they are both too pompous and self righteous to look in the right place (the mirror) to fix the problem
if you were to combine IRL and CCWS attendance together it wouldn't be half bad, then add the fans that used to go but are disgusted after the split, and you have a full blown series again, remember nascar didn't get its push until after the Indy car world series split,
but as for drivers crossing over they aren't leaving open wheel or joining nascar because one has better racing than the other, talent goes where the money is and right now the money in American racing is in nascar, watch how many jump ship when the next big thing happens
as far as f1 bing on the decline, not a chance, nascar irl champ car alms and nhra combined dont have half the viewrship that f1 has , any given sunday - over 800 million veiwers world wide

ok, it's just my opinion, but i think open wheel racing in the USA lost a lot of it's appeal when owners started putting foreign drivers behind the wheel. it's hard to root for somebody from germany, brazil, or (name the country) when you grew up on foyt, mears, andretti, and the clan from new mexico. nascar best be careful (i.e., montoya , toyota). i don't think many will turn out in richmond or talledaga, to see toyotas, subarus, mercedes, and the like ,being raced by people who need passports to get into the country.

Open-wheel racing in the US might be at a nadir, but it's not even close to being "on its way out".
Once the powers than be in IRL and CCWS get their heads out of their butts and settle the ego problems, they can merge and revitalize American open-wheel racing to its former Glory.
That drivers are going to NASCAR is nothing more than the money. Really. AJ went for that, Montoya went for the hamburgers (lol)...

I don't see it. These high profile moves are fueled I believe, more by money than anything else .It's mind-boggling how much money even a so-so racer makes in NASCAR. Besides i think these other guys wnat a new challenge.
BTW- Ray Y.- you talk like one bitter old fart. Must be a hit on the party circuit. Admit it, you may hate change, but you're still following it.

It isn't so bad that they are going out of business, especially F-1 which remains very popular.
The root of the problem is lack of parity. Certain teams dominate while others have no chance of winning ever.
I believe you will see rule changes in the future to move toward parity. Nascar limits technology and requires all teams to use the same tires, fuel etc. and these rules help level the playing field.
In a few years F-1 will have restrictive rules similar to Nascar's limiting technology to help maintain parity and affordability.
Look for them to have side pods so they can do a little rubbing also!

mac-a-licious you need to update yourself on the defections. A former F-1 champ is at Daytona in a stock car as we speak.
