I have no opinion myself other than I don't think I could have it myself. I just want to know other peoples experiences as I was in on a conversation between two people who had strong opposing opinions but no actual experience of the procedure.
I prefer to have some idea what I'm talking about before I join in!

surgeons think its great b/c they make plenty of $$ on it b/c its all out of pocket (no insurance)

patients think it cures everything from glaucoma to cataracts to presbyopia to keratoconus, when it really only works awesome on spherical or near-spherical myopia in totally healthy eyes.

patients think it is a permanent fix, and almost everyone ends up needing reading glasses/bifocals anyway at age 45.

surgeons advertise that it makes you see better than any other form of correction, and that is not true.

i have to see all the problems associated with it, and believe me there are PLENTY of people who wish they'd never heard of it.

people (including some weird surgeons!!??) say that it will someday eliminate the need for glasses, which may be the single most laughable & absurd thing i have ever heard.

it aint near all its cracked up to be.

ive had it done a few years ago. I am SOOO glad I had it done. I LOVE being out in the rain and NOT having glasses getting all wet and spotty. The actual procedure was only 5 minutes long. With in 5 minutes of it being done I was seeing more clearly than I could remember. 4 years later I still have 15/20 vision and I am LOVING it!!!! The only problem I have had was that the actual doctor scared me because I was so nervous. It wasn't his fault. It was mine durring the opteration I was twitching my feet (nerves) and he told me to stop or he would stop the opperation right then and there. He didn't want to cause me damage so I really don't blaim him. I felt absolutly no pain but it is very scarry seeing a lazer and smelling your eye being burnt. I totally reccomend it if you can though. (I know that sounds weird). I had such lovely nurses helping me through out the procedure. I started crying after I was done because I was so amazed/excited/nervous/happy. It was a very emotional procedure. I thank God every day for my eyesight. It is SOOOOO worth it!

I LOVE IT! had it done 2 yrs ago and still see 15/20. The best part is waking up and being able to see the clock across the room. Going swiming and being able to look underwater. I felt I had a handi-cap not being able to see anything farther than 3 feet infront of me so I HAD to get lasik done. We will need only reading glasses around age 45 BUT I am sure enjoying the 25 yrs without any glasses.

I'm not going to get it done since I'm in my 40s and would only be swapping one problem for another. Unlike many people my age, I have not lost my ability to see near objects without glasses or contacts. I would lose that ability if I got LASIK. An option some practioners offer for people my age is to correct one eye and leave the other uncorrected. That to me is a totally unacceptable alternative. That would mean a huge difference in my prescription and I'm not going to walk around wearing glasses with one thick lens or have to wear one contact lens. That's not good enough.
